Urban Meyer: 4 Mistakes He Made at Florida That He Must Not Make at Ohio State

Danny FlynnNov 28, 2011

Urban Meyer hasn't officially confirmed that he will be the next Ohio State head coach yet, but already Buckeyes' fans are dreaming of Big Ten conference championships, and BCS national championships as well.

Although we've yet to get official word, all signs point to Meyer being the next head man in Columbus (Ohio State has scheduled a press-conference for 5:15 later today).

Meyer was set to be the hottest coaching candidate of the offseason, and he was far and away the most successful available candidate out there, so the marriage seems to be one that's made in college football heaven.

Meyer will be back at the school he started his college coaching career at back in 1986, and he'll be the one with the responsibility of building the Buckeyes back up into a national title contender.

If he expects to meet that goal and make the Ohio State fans happy, here are four mistakes that Meyer can't afford to make again.

Lack of Player Control

1 of 4

Ohio State is a program where discipline and good behavior will be at a premium for the next few years. But, if you remember back to Urban Meyer’s days in Gainesville, you know that player behavior was never all that great during his tenure.

27 Florida players were arrested during Meyer’s time at the school, and that’s just not an acceptable number.

Given what’s gone on around the program in recent years, Meyer has to make sure that he keeps all of his players in line and out of trouble, because the last thing that Ohio State would ever need is another scandal involving players.

Flipping out on the Media

2 of 4

Urban Meyer seems like a pretty quality guy overall, but we have seen him flip out on the media before.

In this video, Meyer chastises Orlando Sentinel writer Jeremy Fowler during a Florida practice.

Fowler had written an article involving a quote he got from Gators' receiver Deonte Thompson that was deemed critical of Tim Tebow.

Obviously, Meyer was not a fan of it.

It’s great that Meyer sticks up for his players, but he has to learn that when the time comes to get serious with the media, he has to do it in a more controlled manner.

Make the Offense All About One Player

3 of 4

There was a time during the prime of Tim Tebow’s career when it seemed like the Florida offense was all about him.

Tebow dives up the middle, Tebow runs the option to the right, Tebow runs the option to the left, Tebow does the play-action step to fake a dive and then throws it over the middle.

That seemed to be pretty much the entire Florida offensive arsenal with Tim Tebow at the helm. It worked and it earned the Gators some championship bling but, in 2010 we saw what it was like when Tebow was taken out of the equation.

The offense collapsed.

That’s why no matter how great Meyer's quarterback may be, he must make sure to always keep the offense balanced and not get too focused on one star player.

Even though Tebow was a legendary player, you can tell that the other members of that Florida offense (with the exception of Aaron Hernandez, Tebow’s favorite receiving target) wanted to get at least a few opportunities every now and then.

Forget to Balance out Responsibilities

4 of 4

The pressure of being a coach at a national power program like Florida finally got to Urban Meyer after last season, and he knew he needed to take a break and recharge his batteries.

Now that he’s headed to Ohio State after the one-year hiatus, he’ll have to figure out how to keep himself healthy and how to keep his body and his mind right for this upcoming challenge.

Meyer knows that he could have done a better job of balancing out his coaching responsibilities when he was in Gainesville and, hopefully, he’s learned from overdoing it while at Florida.

If Meyer can learn to ease his foot off the gas every once in a while, the 47-year-old coach should be able to meet a happy medium of being successful and living healthy.
