Urban Meyer to Ohio State: Should Meyer Have Waited for the Notre Dame Job?
According to multiple sources, Urban Meyer will become the next Ohio State head football coach. The former Florida coach will replace Luke Fickell in Columbus.
It has been no secret that Meyer always had three jobs that he would give anything to have—Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Following Brady Hoke’s hiring and consequent outstanding year, there was no way that job was going to happen.
But Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly has had some troubles transitioning into Notre Dame. The Irish are only 8-4 on the season and have lost the turnover battle in their four losses by an embarrassing 16-5.
Should Meyer have waited for the Notre Dame job, or is the move to Ohio State the right call?
Without a doubt, he made the right decision.
Even though he hasn’t had overwhelming success, Kelly is still the right man for the job at Notre Dame. He has brought in some of the best recruiting classes in the country and the fans got a preview of what is in store with Andrew Hendrix at quarterback.
Unless the wheels completely fall off in the next two years—something that is highly unlikely with so much young talent—Kelly was going to keep his job.
The urge to coach never leaves and while the job as an ESPN analyst was pretty nice, nothing will replace getting out on the field and winning a big game. Meyer was not going to last that long, especially with Ohio State on the prowl for a new coach after a disappointing year for Fickell.
Plus, the Buckeyes have as good of a shot of winning the national title as any school in the country. And with Meyer’s prowess as a head coach, plenty of the nation’s most talented high school kids will be coming to Columbus.
Then you have to add in current quarterback Braxton Miller. The stud freshman is far and away the most dynamic player on the offense, and Meyer worked wondrous things with current Denver Bronco Tim Tebow.
He is widely considered one of the best offensive minds in terms of the spread option and it is something that the Big Ten doesn’t see much of. With Miller at the helm, expect the offensive production to rise dramatically and with the entire defense returning from a squad ranking 23rd in total defense, big things are not far away.
There is no question that Meyer made the right decision by coming to Ohio State for next season.
