Redemption: UFC Fights That Wouldn't Have the Same Result if Fought Today Part 1
Mike LeanzaDec 22, 2008
Upset: "To defeat or overthrow an opponent that is considered more formidable, as in war, politics, or sports" as defined by dictionary.com, and MMA is full of them. Although most of the time we see the better fighter win, there's always that one fight that nobody called. Take for instance, Matt Serra/GSP. I've used this fight as an example probably 100 times. Why? Because it is the biggest upset in UFC history.
Matt Serra came into that fight given absolutely no chance to win. Hell, I'm pretty sure we were all wondering whom GSP was going to fight next because he was surely going to destroy this undeserving New Yorker. Then it happened. Matt Serra shocked the world and took the title away from GSP.
We all know what happened after that. GSP destroyed Matt Hughes to earn his rematch, and thoroughly eroded Matt Serra's ribcage with knees until Serra quit. Redemption at its finest. Thats what this article is about. It's the top rematches in UFC history that we want to see, and would probably result in another outcome.
Forrest Griffin vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
Fight of the year. No doubt about it. This fight had near finishes, face-smashing punches and rounds that nobody seemed to be able to call. Not to mention it was the most controversial decision of the year. Oh, and it had the UFC light-heavyweight title on the line.
A lot of people have made excuses for Rampage. After all, he was supposed to beat the original TUF winner. I don't want to hear those excuses. Forrest was the better man that night. But, in my personal opinion, Forrest is not the better fighter.
If we'd had an immediate rematch, which everybody wanted, there is no doubt in my mind that Rampage would pull it out. Do you know what the real problem with Rampage was that night? He underestimated every aspect of Forrest's game. Great fighters don't make that mistake twice. Just ask GSP.
Andrei Arlovski vs. Tim Silvia
I know, I know. "Mike, we've seen this fight three times already. Tim beat him twice, there's no need to see this fight again." Yeah, well, I disagree. Yes, we've seen this fight three times and yeah, two of those three times Tim was the better man. But I refuse to believe Tim Silvia is better than Andrei Arlovski right now.
The first time we saw these guys pitted against one another, Andrei came away with a submission victory to win the interim heavyweight belt. He was way better than Tim that night, finishing Tim just 47 seconds into the fight. There next meeting, Andrei came close to ending Tim's night early once again, but got too excited and came face to fist with a close range bomb from Tim Silvia. Tim got the finish and that leaves us with round three.
This fight went the distance. Neither Tim nor Andrei could finish the other man. Tim pulled out a decision win, but it was later discovered that Andrei had suffered a leg injury in the second round, which left him without his kicks or his ability to shoot. You put a 100 percent healthy Andrei Arlovski, the way he's fighting now, against Tim Silvia, you've got yourself a massacre.
