Alabama Football: Just Get over It! Why so Many People Don't Understand the BCS
Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer) I just got back from vacation, and on this trip I talked sports to a lot of people from all over the world in Curacao. I thought it was funny that people from countries other than the U.S. seemed to understand the purpose of the BCS more than our own citizens.
When you see writers penning articles that state that Alabama doesn't deserve to be in the BCS Championship Game, or list reasons why they shouldn't, they are simply showing how stupid they are in understanding what the BCS was founded to accomplish.
The BCS was not founded to put conference champions together. It was not founded to avoid rematches. It was not founded to put undefeated teams in the game. It was not founded to put together two teams fans wanted to see. It was not founded to put two teams from different conferences together.
The BCS was founded to put the top two teams together to fight for the BCS Championship.
The fact that some people understand this and some people don't is why there are legitimate sports people and there are bloggers.
The fact the some understand this, and still write drivel on why it will be different than that, are simply sensationalists and should be immediately dismissed as serious writers.
The fact that foreigners seemed to understand that it didn't matter that this could be a rematch, as long as it was number one against number two, and people from the U.S. seemed to want a different matchup, tells me that a lot of U.S. fans simply want entertainment.
This is exactly the same reason that a presidential candidate can actually get more votes for president and still lose the election. If you don't understand the Electoral College that seems unfair, but to argue that a candidate should be elected with less Electoral College votes means you don't understand that system either.
If an author doesn't like the BCS system, write an article giving the readers a better way or explain why you feel the system needs to be changed.
But writing articles that say that Alabama, as the nation's number two team, shouldn't play in the BCS game, or that it doesn't deserve to play in the game as the number two team, show that these authors simply shouldn't be writing.
They are openly admitting to everyone who sees their work that they simply don't understand the BCS system, the game, or why the BCS was founded.
That's why all the national media heads, from ESPN on down, all openly admit that Alabama should be in the title game. They understand the system. There's a reason that they are in their position and bloggers posing as authors aren't.
Number one is supposed to play number two. Alabama is clearly number two. If you don't like that, get over it. If you don't understand that, don't write about it.
