Georgia vs. Georgia Tech: Grading the Bulldogs Win over the Yellow Jackets
It was the final game of the regular season for the Georgia Bulldogs, and they wanted to be in prime form before they head into the SEC Championship game against LSU.
The Bulldogs were able to dominate Georgia Tech on offense, defense and special teams, and it looks like they are ready for postseason play.
While the Bulldogs did a lot of good things, there were a few areas of concern which Mark Richt has to address.
Here are grades for the Bulldogs in their win against Georgia Tech.
Quarterback: A
1 of 8Aaron Murray did not have his best game against Kentucky, but was able to bounce back in a huge way against Georgia Tech.
Murray threw for 252 yards and four touchdowns and made it look easy in the process.
Murray will have a tough time shredding a physical LSU defense, but Murray continues to get better each game and will make the Tigers work for everything they earn.
Running Backs: C-
2 of 8It was a good thing Murray was able to make plays with his arm because the run game was struggling throughout.
Isaiah Crowell did not play, so Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcolme had to carry the load. Thomas could never get anything going, and Malcolme struggled early, but came on strong in the fourth quarter.
Branden Smith carried the ball five times for 20 yards, and Murray was second on the team in rushing with 35 yards.
Receivers: B
3 of 8It was really good to see Orson Charles have a big game because it was something fans have been waiting for all season. Charles pulled down five catches for 95 yards.
Michael Bennett, Chris Conley, Aron White and Tavarres King did not have a ton of receptions, but each of them had a touchdown grab.
There is not a No. 1 receiver in this group, but all of them can make plays when their number is called.
Offensive Line: B
4 of 8The offensive line did a solid job in run blocking, but really did a tremendous job protecting Murray and making sure he made the necessary throws all game long.
Ben Jones has been a constant leader for this team, and it was good to give him one more win over Georgia Tech. It will be better to give him a SEC championship before he moves on.
Defensive Line: A
5 of 8The Yellow Jackets did rush for over 200 yards, but they never had the big running plays because the defensive line was able to generate pressure.
John Jenkins had his best game, as he tallied six tackles and one sack.
Abry Jones and Garrison Smith also played well, as both players racked up seven tackles.
The line suffered a huge blow when DeAngelo Tyson went down with a injury early in the game. Hopefully, it's not too serious, because the Bulldogs need everybody healthy next week.
Linebackers: A-
6 of 8The linebackers did a good job keeping everything in front of them and maintaining their assignments. Alec Ogletree led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles, and it was another day in the office for Jarvis Jones, as he tallied eight tackles and one sack.
Michael Gilliard also played well, with four tackles and one interception.
Secondary: B+
7 of 8This was not surprising because the Tech passing game is ranked near the bottom of the BCS and the Georgia pass defense is one of the best in the SEC.
Shawn Williams had a key interception to go along with his six tackles. Other than that, the secondary did not have too many tackles, which is a good thing because you want the defensive lineman and linebacker getting the tackles while the secondary makes sure the receivers don't get open.
Special Teams: A
8 of 8Blair Walsh missed a field goal in the fourth quarter, but made one in the second quarter which was more important.
Drew Butler was on point, as two of his three punts landed inside the Yellow Jackets 5-yard line.
Brandon Boykin had a nice 60-yard return and shows he is still dangerous.
And the kickoff and punt coverage was solid like they have been the last few games. It was a good day for the special teams, and the unit, along with the rest of the team, looks ready for their final SEC game of the year.
