BCS Rankings 2011: 5 Teams Likely to Be out of the BCS Top 25 Next Week
For some, rivalry weekend is a fitting culmination of a long season with a big win, For others, it's a bitter pill to swallow, knowing they have 365 days of waiting ahead until their next chance at their bitter rival.
Many teams and fanbases will suffer the negative effects of losing their final game. For these five teams currently ranked in the BCS Top 25, the failure to finish the season on a high note will leave them absent from next week's final standings.
Auburn
1 of 5The Tigers were the highest-ranked four-loss team heading into the Iron Bowl, but a 42-14 humbling at home will knock Auburn out of the BCS Standings.
A 7-5 season seems about right for a team that lost so many pieces of its 2010 National Championship team, but that won't ease the pain of a blowout loss to Alabama—neither will falling from No. 24 to unranked in the final BCS Standings.
Clemson
2 of 5Clemson has gone into full-fledged Clemson mode, dropping three of its last four after an 8-0 start, including being relatively uncompetitive with South Carolina on Saturday night in Columbia.
The Tigers now must face red-hot Virginia Tech, winners of seven straight, in the ACC Championship Game. They'll hang on to a Top 25 spot this week, but should the Hokies hand Clemson its fourth loss in five games, the Tigers might be out of the rankings just a month after seemingly being a viable national title contender.
Georgia Tech
3 of 5The team that ended Clemson's perfect season, Georgia Tech, also struggled down the stretch, dropping four of its final six games. The Yellow Jackets lost for the 10th time in 11 games to rival Georgia.
At 8-4, the Jackets figure to drop out of the BCS Standings from their No. 23 position. It was a successful season for Paul Johnson's team after going 6-7 in 2010, but the disappointing finish and fall from the rankings should fuel them as they prepare for a bowl game.
Notre Dame
4 of 5Once again, Notre Dame was in the national spotlight. Once again, Notre Dame put on a performance that left us wondering why it was even in the spotlight to begin with.
The Irish fell to 8-4 with a 28-14 loss at Stanford, and have only one win against a team with a winning record. They rallied from an 0-2 start to win eight of their next nine games, but after a sloppy loss to the Cardinal, they'll return to the outside of the BCS Standings.
Texas
5 of 5The Longhorns sent their hated rivals from Texas A&M off to the SEC with a stunning 27-25 win in College Station on Thanksgiving night, but Texas has another difficult task in their season finale at Baylor.
The Bears are a perfect 6-0 at home this season, and the Longhorns offense appeared lifeless against the Aggies until benefiting from some key turnovers. Baylor's Robert Griffin III protects the football as well as any quarterback, so Texas won't be so fortunate in Waco.
With a loss that would drop them to 7-5, the Longhorns won't be a part of the final BCS Standings for the second straight season.
