Notre Dame vs Stanford: Were Andrew Luck's 4 TDs Enough to Win the Heisman?

Dan VastaNov 26, 2011

Well, Andrew Luck threw four touchdowns against Notre Dame, and the biggest question in the world of college football is whether or not it was enough to win the Heisman?

Looking at the numbers, 35 passing touchdowns is a boatload. However, Luck is expected to be the top pick in the NFL draft and is without a shadow of a doubt an elite college player.

Most believe he is "the most outstanding player" and deserves the Heisman for what he has done with a Stanford team that is not extremely talented. The team has been through a ton of injuries and dominated teams in September and October

November has been a different month for the Cardinal since they only defeated Cal by three points and Notre Dame by 14.

The Irish seem to be a talented team although they are just 8-4 and Cal is just 7-5. However, in their one huge game against Oregon, they were smashed. It was a home game and many expected Stanford to come through at home.

Instead, they lost by 23 to the Ducks and Luck's chances to win the Heisman were put on hold.

There are many great choices that are contending for the Heisman, but only Trent Richardson is the one who can knock off Luck. Richardson played his best when it mattered most, at least to win the Heisman.

"The Freak" toted it 27 times for 203 yards and also caught a pass for a five yard touchdown. He also did it against the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl when the entire nation was watching (same goes for Luck against Irish).

However, Richardson's team is poised to play for all the marbles and Luck is going to have to settle for an at-large bid in the BCS. Also, don't forget that Richardson's numbers are even better than Mark Ingram's were through 12 games. Does that play a factor at all?

Does playing for the title make the smallest of differences between the two?

Most "experts" sometimes make their vote before conference championships, but neither of these players will be playing next weekend.

Luck went off against some lower-tier Pac-12 team (he doesn't make up the schedule) whereas Richardson did it against a few elite SEC teams (LSU, Arkansas).

The Heisman could arguably be decided next weekend if Robert Griffin goes off against a ranked Texas Longhorns teams. Millions will be watching that game waiting to see if RGIII really is the best in the game. Plus, Case Keenum could move up at least if he goes off in the Conference USA Championship.

As usual in college football, we are always looking at a fluid situation where things change every week. But, in my book, Trent Richardson has the slightest of leads we have seen in quite some time.
