Iron Bowl 2011: Bama's Latest Beatdown & 5 Most Lopsided Iron Bowl Games Ever

Ian BergNov 26, 2011

The Iron Bowl has proven time and again why it is considered to be one of the nastiest rivalry games in college football. The Crimson Tide and Tigers battle once a year to determine who gets the annual bragging rights inside the state.

Usually the game is fought closely and ends by plays that happen in the fourth quarter, but this season the game was put away by halftime. The Crimson Tide rolled to a win over the Tigers 42-14. The Crimson Tide made sure that the country knew that they felt they deserved a second shot at LSU.

Looking back at rare games in the rivalry, here are five more games that had extremely lopsided scores in the Iron Bowl rivalry.

Nov 18, 2008 Alabama 36 Auburn 0

This is one of the most lopsided victories for either team in the history of the series. The Tigers were spinning out of control after the assumed firing of Tommy Tuberville was looming in the not-so-distant future. The Crimson Tide were marching toward an SEC title game and possible national title berth.

Alabama destroyed Auburn across the board and sealed the fate of the Tuberville era with the blowout victory.

Nov 21, 1998 Alabama 31 Auburn 17

Auburn has won more of the Iron Bowl contests than Alabama during the rivalry's most recent history, but the Tide have managed to blow the Tigers away during some of their victories. Auburn was having one of their worst seasons of the decade with the mid-season departure of Terry Bowden.

Under the leadership of Bill Oliver, the Tigers were simply overwhelmed and got laid-out against Alabama.

Nov 27, 1971 Alabama 31 Auburn 7

Auburn and Alabama faced off in their annual rivalry game in Birmingham when Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley came to town. The Tigers were looking to ride the talent of their outside receiver and Heisman winning quarterback to a victory.

The Tide had other plans as they routed the Tigers 31-7. Despite the major loss, Pat Sullivan was able to win the Heisman trophy.

Nov 27, 1965 Alabama 30 Auburn 3

Auburn traveled to Legion Field in 1965 looking to knock off the No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide and stop their instate arch-rival from earning a national championship. The Tide was able to ride the effective offense ran by Ken Stabler to victory and one of the largest margin of victories for the Tide in Iron Bowl history.

The Tide went on to be crowned the AP National Champion.

Dec 4, 1948 Alabama 55 Auburn 0

In the very first game that the Tide and Tigers played since the series was suspended in 1907, the Tide routed the Tigers 55-0. There was nothing that the Auburn Tigers could do to fend off the Tide as Alabama simply outmatched the Tigers on their way to victory.
