NBA Free Agents: Marc Gasol and More Star Players Who Must Be Re-Signed

Tim DanielsNov 26, 2011

In what's likely to be one of the most hectic free-agent periods in NBA history, teams will need to make quick decisions about which players to bring back. Here are three potentially elite free agents who must be re-signed by their current squads.

Marc Gasol – Memphis Grizzlies

Gasol, along with frontcourt partner Zach Randolph, dominated the San Antonio Spurs en route to a huge first-round upset in last season's playoffs. He averaged 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks during the regular season.

If Memphis wants to build off its momentum from last campaign, the Grizzlies can't let Gasol get away, regardless of any other offers he receives. Between Randolph, Gasol and Rudy Gay among others, they have built a solid foundation in Memphis.

That said, they don't have a ton of depth yet, so the front office must maintain what it already owns.

Thaddeus Young – Philadelphia 76ers

Young doesn't receive the respect he deserves on a national level because he doesn't drop 20 PPG. He's still a dynamic player who can play two, maybe even three, positions and scored 13 points while grabbing five boards in just 26 minutes per game.

His playing time needs to increase if he's going to reach full potential. Sliding him into the starting lineup alongside Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala would give Philadelphia one of the most versatile backcourts in the NBA.

Hopefully, the 76ers realize what they have in Young before he gets away and it's too late.

DeAndre Jordan – Los Angeles Clippers

Jordan is slowly but surely developing into a solid NBA player. He's another player who needs more minutes to thrive after averaging seven points and rebounds in his third season. There's no reason a player with his talent shouldn't be a double-double machine.

Blake Griffin will be the Clippers' cornerstone for many years to come, and Jordan could become the Robin to his Batman. Chris Kaman struggled with a knee injury most of last season, and Los Angeles should start focusing more on a youth movement anyway.

The Clippers need to bring back Jordan, increase his minutes and find out if he'll ever reach his high ceiling.
