Jets-Seahawks: New York Playoff Hopes On Life Support

Sergei MiledinDec 21, 2008

It's hard to believe that at one point this season the New York Jets were actually favored to go deep into the NFL's second season. It's even harder to believe that the words Jets and Superbowl were placed in the same sentence by various writers across America.

The latest installment of Gang Green's quick sinking ship saw them travel to a snowy Seattle for an encounter with the 3-11 Seahawks. With their coach at home for the final time the Seahawks gave all of their heart as if the postseason were a possibility. Maybe if the Jets thought that Eric Mangini's job depended on it as much as their playoff hopes things would have been different.

The Jets again started with a successful opening drive that would see them go all the way to the Seattle two-yard line. However, they opted to go for the FG instead of going for a 4th-and-1 against the league's 30th ranked defense. It would be their only score for the Jets, who could have just sent Jay Feely today, since he was the only one involved in any scoring opportunity.

It would be the only scoring for the quarter as both teams couldnt get much done as the snowy conditions worsened. The Seahawks would give the ball back to the Jets twice due to turnovers but Gang Green could not even break Feely's FG range. The Jets would also turn the ball over courtesy of Brett Favre on a complete underthrow to the hands of Josh Wilson.

The Seahawks would finally get on the board when backup QB Seneca Wallace found TE John Carlson for a two-yard score against a Jets defender who never looked at the ball.

They would add a Olindo Mare field-goal from 31 yards and I am sure the ex-Dolphin wanted to help his former employer out by adding three points which seemed like 100 the way the Jets were playing.

Then it would be the coaching miscues that would re-take the game. After actually crossing into FG range the Jets were charged with a delay of game as Jay Feely's 45-yard kick was called back. Even though he had enough on the kick for an extra ten yards, Mangini would opt to punt it despite Feelys plea's.

The Jets waited to the dying moments to make something happen. Starting on their own 12, Favre was sacked at the five, setting up a 3rd-and-long. He connected with Laveranues Coles for 15 yards. On the next play, Favre attempted to catch him down the middle, but the ball squeaked out from under him.

Why they waited so long to go deep is anyone's guess, but the game would be sealed on the next possesion which resulted in another interception as the Jets left Seattle going 0-4 in the west coast. The game could have been played on the moon as far as I'm concerned because the result would be the same.

The Jets no longer look like a powerhouse, a Superbowl contender, or anything resembling a well coached football team. They failed to reach the end-zone for the first time all season.

They now need a win over the Dolphins next week and a loss by either New England or Baltimore, who face Buffalo (7-8) and Jacksonville (5-10), respectively.

The Good: Nothing was good about this game. Utter Embarssment is an understatment.

The Bad: Brett Favre, the one time wizard in the cold snowy weather played terribly to counter his miserable expression on the side line.

The Ugly: "Mangenius" looked anything but as his team was outplayed in every aspect.

Game ball:  Seneca Williams played well for his team going 18-25 for 175 with one TD.
