Bold MLB Predictions for Second-Half

Should MLB Implement Performance-Based Contracts?

Wendy AdairDec 20, 2008

With the ever-declining economy and the sky rocketing MLB ticket prices, performance-based contracts should be considered.  Teams are paying their players enormous amounts of money whether they play 162 games or 50 games.

Why should position players like third basemen Chipper Jones and David Wright get similar pay (I don't know Chipper Jones' salary, but I imagine it is quite substantial) for not playing nearly the same amount of games during the season?

Jones, as an older player, is more susceptible to injury, while Wright is relatively young and extremely durable. He was the only player to not miss an inning of play until June 24 in the 2008 season.

I understand that once a player achieves veteran status a certain level of respect is to be expected, but the salary range in the declining years when injuries shelve players for extended periods of time should be adjusted.

Players who spend a lot of time on the disabled list should not be paid their full salary that year. Why should the fans pay to watch replacement guys when the starting position players/pitchers are relaxing or rehabbing at home?  Major League players know that playing through minor injuries is part of the job and that surgeries are needed and muscles must heal. However, there needs to be a line drawn with regard to salaries.

Here is my recommendation: a base salary of between $750,000 and $1 million for all players, with the rest determined by performance, games/innings played, ERA incentives for pitchers such as John Maine and Jamie Moyer, and AVG/OBP incentives for hitters.

Speedsters such as Juan Pierre and Jose Reyes should have incentives for that as well. Sluggers such as David Wright and Ryan Howard should have incentives for slugging percentage/HR/RBI figures.  Sacrifice fly and bunting situations as well as runners moved over statistics should be considered as well because they are a part of the game.
