Arkansas vs LSU: We Should Root for Arkansas to Further BCS Chaos
I'll be playing the part of anarchist today, but only for the greater good of humanity.
If No. 3 Arkansas beats No. 1 LSU on Friday, the BCS system we have all come to know and love (insert sarcasm here) will go up in flames. And while more chaos probably isn't the way you want to start your weekend, it might be good for college football in the long run, because it may, just may, exact a transition to a playoff system.
Get this: if Arkansas defeats LSU, there will be a three-way tie between Arkansas, LSU and Alabama in the SEC West if the Crimson Tide defeat Auburn.
What is the tie-breaker scenario? The lower-ranked team in the BCS is eliminated, and the head-to-head record of the two top teams decides who goes to the SEC Championship Game.
The hilarious thing about all of this? If Arkansas beats LSU, the likely BCS standings would be: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Arkansas and No. 3 LSU.
No. 2 Arkansas, despite being lower than Alabama, would actually be better off, because the Razorbacks wouldn't have to face No. 13 Georgia in the SEC title game and risk potentially becoming a two-loss team and getting kicked out of the BCS Championship Game. This would also irritate some folks who believe that LSU is the best team in the nation and deserves to go to the title game, regardless if they lose to Arkansas.
Obviously, your stance on the issue depends on if you favor a playoff system or not. To be fair, the BCS has actually selected the right championship game teams for the most part. But an Arkansas win would highlight the fact that the BCS system is nonetheless flawed and has the ability of hurting college football.
Maybe that's just the chaos we need to bring about change.
