Arkansas vs LSU: Razorbacks' BCS Dreams Ride on Tyler Wilson's Arm
The Arkansas Razorbacks will soon play in their biggest game of the year, and if they want any shot at winning, Tyler Wilson must be superb, as he is what makes their offense go.
Nobody knew how the Razorbacks would fare this season without Ryan Mallett, but Wilson has exceeded expectations. He's had some rough moments, but overall, he has done a great job for the Razorbacks.
Wilson has to be on his A-game against the No. 1 LSU Tigers on Friday. Arkansas has a chance to play in the BCS title game with a win over LSU and some good luck, but only if Wilson makes smart decisions and big-time throws against LSU.
When Knile Davis went down with an ankle injury and was lost for the season, all the pressure was placed on Wilson. He came through in the clutch, getting Arkansas to a 10-1 season and ranked No. 3 in the country.
The Tigers have arguably one of the best defenses in the country, which means Wilson is in for one heck of a game this Friday. The Battle for the Golden Boot is always intense, and normally LSU walks away victorious, but the Razorbacks will give them the ultimate test.
There's no question that LSU has been the best team in college football this year, but they haven't really had to deal with great quarterbacks this year. Wilson will be the toughest one they face this season, and he could easily pick them apart all day long. It won't be easy, though, because the Tigers will be prepared to prevent Wilson from having a monster performance. It's a very intriguing matchup, but one where Wilson has to be the winner if the Razorbacks wish to play in a BCS bowl game.
Wilson has to get adequate protection from his offensive line for any of this to happen. Barrett Sallee is a SEC Columnist for College Football News, and he tweeted how important it is for Wilson to stay upright.
Everybody knows LSU will be after Wilson, and if they ring his bell early in the game, then the Razorbacks are toast.
Keeping Wilson safe is priority No. 1 on Friday. The junior quarterback has thrown only two interceptions in his last seven games, but none of those opposing defenses are as talented as LSU. He's thrown for multiple touchdowns in his last three games and is very capable of doing the same on Friday.
LSU has battled a bunch of subpar quarterbacks so far this season, except for Geno Smith. The West Virginia quarterback torched the Tigers defense for 463 yards. Since that game, LSU hasn't given up over 200 yards passing, but that should change after this weekend.
The Razorbacks have a chance to shock the college football world, but only if Wilson delivers. A poor performance from him will result in a huge LSU win.
Arkansas' defense has allowed an average of 30 points against ranked teams this year, which means Wilson and the offense cannot falter. The opportunity is there for the taking, but if Wilson and his arm fail on Friday, the Razorbacks will miss out on a BCS invite. Getting this close only to be shunned away at the last minute would be devastating for the Razorbacks, which is why they will be in this game for all four quarters.
