Urban Meyer to OSU Rumors: Why the Former Coach Can Surpass Tressel's Legacy
Multiple sources including Scout.com's Bill Greene have been reporting for the past several days that former Florida coach Urban Meyer will accept the head coach job at Ohio State sometime after Saturday's Michigan game.
While we will have to wait a few days to find out whether or not Meyer will actually sign on the dotted line, it's undeniable what he can bring to a beleaguered Buckeye program.
The first thing he will bring is a very competent offensive coaching staff, which is far from what Buckeye fans have seen under Jim Bollman's decade-long reign of terror.
He has a good amount of personnel on the offense to work with including freshman stud Braxton Miller, who could be Tebow-esque for Meyer.
Miller has already shown the ability to run on big-time college defenses but hasn't been given all that many opportunities to throw simple routes.
Meyer's spread-look focuses on a mix of short and long routes that will allow Miller to find receivers in space and let them make plays, another grievance of the Bollman offense.
Those types of things will help him to grow more in the passing game and let that dimension of his game enhance his feet.
From a team perspective, Meyer's philosophy of being an attacking, aggressive team that plays fast will be welcome in Columbus.
Too often, it seems that teams have taken their game to Ohio State under Jim Tressel.
With Meyer, the scenario should be reversed where his teams will impose their will on opponents with their aggressive play.
At times, Tressel's teams have let opponents dictate the way the game is played.
And although they have managed to win most of those games with good running, defense and winning the turnover battle, that doesn't always work in today's game.
It's a matter of having skill and being the aggressor, with the want to make one more play than the other guy to be able to win big games.
Tressel's teams did get better at doing that in the final years of his Buckeye career, including in bowl wins over Oregon and Arkansas (later vacated).
The biggest shame is that Tressel's legacy will not be remembered for what he did, but for what he didn't do that got him fired from Ohio State.
If Urban Meyer comes to Ohio State, he should have the tools in place to not only match Tressel's national championship and two national runner-ups, but maybe even surpass it.
Along with what he has in his resume comes another rumor of Meyer bringing one of the highest-paid assistant coaching staffs in college football history, including current Florida assistant D.J. Durkin and LSU offensive coordinator Greg Studrawa.
The potential for a program to not only dig itself out of the hole that they dug themselves nearly one year ago today, it could emerge better than imagined.
The coach that idolized Woody Hayes, and even has a picture of him in his home office, might have a career that the old coach would have been proud of.
But first, he has to make it official.
All that's missing from another period of Buckeye dominance is his signature.
