John Cena: Outclassed, Overmatched and Owned by The Rock

Tony DolemiteNov 24, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you're enjoying your holidays. I know I am, big-time! Although I feel stuffed, lethargic and a bit cranky, I will put all of this to the side and keep the promise I made to myself and to you—to continue to write no matter what. The following has been on my mind all week, and I need to get this off my chest.

This past Sunday night, I attended the 2011 Survivor Series at Madison Square Garden. For the first time ever, I saw The Rock live as he teamed with John Cena against The Miz and R-Truth in the main event.

The Rock was everything I expected him to be: entertaining, exciting and, quite simply, electrifying. I don't have any other words to describe what I felt except maybe overwhelmed.

From the moment he cut his first promo to the time he actually appeared live in the ring, he captivated the fans. He not only held his own during the match, he was the match. He looked fantastic. He, along with The Miz and R-Truth, gave us our money's worth.

Too bad I can't say the same about John Cena.

I admit I was disappointed in Cena, who I have done nothing but support from day one. I can't imagine what it's like to be this man, the supposed face of the company, who gets booed more often than not.

I usually feel his pain. He deserves better because of all that he has done for the company. I maintain that and will continue to do so as long as I can.

Sunday night should have been his night to shine too, but instead he looked weak and out of place. He looked like a rookie fresh out of wrestling school. Cena should have brought his A-game. Instead he left his game at home. All he did was stand on the ring apron, smile and acknowledge the fans as they worshipped The Rock, begging him not to tag him in.

Nothing but boos rained down on Cena, who acted as if this were par for the course. Cena looked overmatched on Sunday night. It might as well have been a handicapped match between The Rock, Miz and Truth. Hell, even Miz and Truth got props Sunday night. That says a lot.

The Rock did exactly what he came to do—whoop some ass and entertain the hell out of us! Sunday night he owned Cena's ass badly. He outclassed Cena's ass badly.

I don't know what Cena came to do and apparently neither did he. He got lost in Rock's shadow, something that he can't afford to do as we approach WrestleMania. He needs to make a statement immediately.

When I say statement, I mean he needs to give Rock an attitude adjustment. I'm trying not to jump on the 'Cena should become a heel' bandwagon. As I have stated in a previous article I wrote, making Cena a heel is the easy way out for creative. I still feel that he should maintain class and dignity, but he should demand respect from The Rock.

Of course, that won't happen, but at least show us that you aren't a punk either. I am sure that his match with Rock will be competitive, but we have to start caring. Give us a reason to care.

Cena needs to stand up for himself as a modern-day soldier. Instead all Cena gets for his trouble is called out by Rock in order to get a Rock Bottom.

Creative needs to let Cena cut loose and whoop some ass. No more lameness. This is serious. If Cena continues to smile all the way to WrestleMania, he might as well smile his way out of a career.

Right now The Rock is way ahead on points. That's not a good thing, John Cena.
