Chelsea vs. Bayer Leverkusen: 4 Reasons Blues Must Win Champions League Clash
Chelsea must defeat Bayer Leverkusen.
It's as simple as that.
On paper, the Blues can afford a loss or draw against Leverkusen and still advance in the Champions League. However, this match has more meaning behind it than a simple victory.
Chelsea have been reeling, and they desperately need a win to right the ship. There is not a better time to get that win. Wednesday's clash in Germany gives Chelsea plenty of reasons to fight for a victory.
Accordingly, I have compiled a list of five reasons why Chelsea can't afford to drop any points in Germany. Feel free to let me know what you think.
Form Is Terrible
1 of 4Chelsea have only two victories in their last six matches (all competitions) and they have looked downright confused in some of those matches.
The team is in disarray. Most players aren't playing well. The players that are playing decent can't seem to link up well. And, worst of all, no one on the team seems to be too frustrated.
Form is a trivial thing. An impressive win can turn everything around and this poor run can easily be forgotten. However, a win is necessary for that to happen.
For that reason, when Chelsea travels to Germany, they must defeat Bayer Leverkusen. In doing so, they have a good chance of turning their poor form around.
Andre Villas-Boas Is Being Questioned
2 of 4Good teams have faith in their managers.
As far as we know, Chelsea players have faith in Andre Villas-Boas. But for how much longer?
There are murmurings about the axe coming down on Villas-Boas, but he doesn't seem too worried. Even so, he was recently fined £12,000 for his comments after a frustrating loss against Queens Park Rangers. While those complaints had some grounds, the frustration has been shown.
Everyone should be frustrated at this point. It makes sense. With that said, the players must have the utmost faith in their manager to get the job done.
Right now, Villas-Boas seems to have that faith. If the losing continues, how long will that faith stick around?
Best XI Could Be Discovered
3 of 4Does anyone even know who Chelsea's best XI players are?
Unfortunately, no.
As long as that's the case, the team will continue to struggle. Without the best combination of players on the pitch the Blues are going to continue having mental lapses leading to goals. In addition, they are going to struggle to find the back of the net themselves.
A win in Germany is always a good thing. By going to BayArena and earning three points, Andre Villas-Boas could move toward a better understanding of his players.
It wouldn't set anything in stone, but a win would shed some light on the best choices for Chelsea.
They Want to Advance as Early as Possible
4 of 4In their last Champions League match, Chelsea had a chance to get a firm grip on Group E. In doing so, they would've nearly clinched a spot in the knockout stages.
Instead, Chelsea drew to Genk, and now, if they drop points in this match, the Blues risk being eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage.
That would be embarrassing.
Chelsea are one of the top clubs in Europe and they deserve to be playing deep into competitions. That being said, they have a legitimate chance of being knocked out right away.
A loss or draw against Bayer Leverkusen would make their match against Valencia (Dec. 6th) even tougher. Assuming Valencia defeat Genk, the Spanish side could come into Stamford Bridge and eliminate the Blues from the European competition.
However, if Chelsea are victorious in Germany they will be through to the next stage, allowing everyone around the club to breathe a little easier.
Chelsea don't want to have too much pressure on Dec. 6th, which is why they must defeat Leverkusen on Wednesday.
