10 Most Desirable College Football Coaching Jobs

BradNov 27, 2011

There are a bunch of things that factor into what makes a head coaching job desirable. In my opinion, the main components that determine its desirability are the ability to recruit, prestige, fan support, salary and national championship contention.

In this article, I will rank the top 10 coaching jobs in the country based on those components.  I will rank each of the schools from one to 10 (10 being best, one being worst) in each of the categories, the scores for each category will be added up and the best coaching gig in the country will be determined.

Here are the schools that made the cut:

Florida State, Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU, Alabama, USC, Michigan and Notre Dame.

Recruiting

1 of 6

The rankings for recruiting are based on the recruiting fertility of the school's location, the ability to recruit nationally and the strength of the school's current recruiting class.

FSU10After posting the best recruiting class in the country, Florida State currently has the ninth-best recruiting class in the country.  Although the Seminoles are located in Florida, which is arguably the best location for recruiting, they do not rely too heavily on prospects from the state of Florida as they recruit pretty well nationally.
Alabama9 'Bama owns the second-best recruiting class in the country.  This recruiting class features many players from the recruiting hotbed that is Alabama, but it also features recruits from all over the south.
Florida8The Gators feature the fifth-best recruiting class in the country, and much like their rivals, Florida State, they do a great job at assembling their recruiting class with a blend of recruits ranging from Florida all the way up to the Midwest.
Texas7For the most part, The Longhorns own one of the best recruiting classes in the country every year; this year is no exception as Texas ranks second in the nation.  Although Texas perennially has some of the best recruits in the country, Texas relies too much on its region as it only has one out-of-state commit.
Michigan6The Wolverines have the best recruiting class in the country as they have dominated the state of Michigan and the rest of the Midwest.  Although Michigan is not the best state in terms of recruiting, Michigan has established a pipeline throughout the whole Midwest and has even poached a couple recruits from the West Coast.
LSU5The Tigers currently have the seventh-best recruiting class in the country.  They have a solid recruiting base in Louisiana and are decent when recruiting nationally.
Notre Dame4The Fighting Irish have the 11th-best recruiting class in the country.  Recruiting in Indiana is decent at best, so the Irish look nationally to fill the bulk of their recruiting class.  Because of this the Irish lack a consistent recruiting pipeline.
Ohio State3The Buckeyes' recruiting class ranks 14th so far this year, a ranking that is diminutive compared to the rankings they have posted in recent years.  This recent struggle is most likely due to the scandals they have faced this past year, in this time Michigan has taken over the state of Ohio and it might be hard for Ohio State to regain their dominance on the recruiting trail.
Oklahoma2The Sooners' recruiting class is currently ranked 13th in the nation.  The state of Oklahoma does not have very many highly rated recruits making the Sooners have to rely on national recruiting to keep their recruiting class near the top.
USC1Although California is a great recruiting state, Southern Cal has struggled on the recruiting trail thus far.  USC has no commits outside of California, and is really hurting recruiting-wise.

Prestige

2 of 6

The prestige of a coaching position is based off the program's history.  National championships, wins, Heisman winners and conference championships all factor into prestige.

Michigan10Most all-time wins, best winning percentage, second-most national championships and most all-time conference championships.  What more can I say?
Notre Dame9Seven national championships, third-most all-time wins and tied for most Heisman winners.
Texas8Four national championships, second-most all-time wins and two Heisman winners.
Alabama7Most national championships, 22 conference championships, sixth-most all-time wins and only one Heisman winner, but another one could be on the way as Trent Richardson is a front-runner for this year's award.
Ohio State 6Seven national championships, fifth-most all-time wins, 35 conference championships and tied for most Heisman winners.
Oklahoma5Seven national championships, eighth-most all-time wins and fourth-most Heisman winners.
USC4Tied for second-most national championships, 10th-most all-time wins, third-most Heisman winners and 37 conference championships.
Florida3Three national championships and three Heisman Trophy winners.
LSU2Four national championships and one Heisman Trophy winner.
FSU1Two national championships, 12 conference championships and two Heisman Trophy winners.

Fan Support

3 of 6

The rankings for fan support are based are based on the size of the school's fan base and fan loyalty.

Michigan10Michigan has the largest stadium in football and, as a result, it also holds the attendance record.  Even through the tough times Michigan has faced recently, it has still managed to have at least 100,000 people attend every game dating all the way back to 1975.
Alabama9Alabama has the fifth-largest stadium in football and had the fourth-largest average attendance. 'Bama fans are known to be as loyal and die hard as any in the country.
Notre Dame8Notre Dame might not have one of the biggest stadiums in the country, but it fills it up every game.  The thing about Notre Dame's fan base that is different than all the other fan bases is that they are all over; anywhere you go you can will find Notre Dame fans.
LSU7LSU has the 10th-biggest stadium in the country and had the eighth-largest average attendance in 2010.  LSU's fans are known to produce more noise than anyone else in the country.
Ohio State6 OSU has the fourth-biggest stadium in the country and had the second-largest average attendance in 2010.  OSU fans have shown a lot of loyalty by continuing to support their team through the tough times they are going through.
Texas5Texas has the sixth-biggest stadium in the country and had the fifth-largest average attendance in 2010.
Oklahoma4Oklahoma does not have the biggest stadium in the country, but it fills it up every game.
Florida3Florida had the ninth-largest average attendance, as it filled up its stadium every game.  Florida fans are known to be very rabid during their games.
FSU2Florida State has a decently sized stadium, but it left an average of 11,000 seats empty every game.
USC1Southern Cal features the ninth-largest stadium in the nation, but if the team isn't winning the fans don't show up, as an average of 14,000 seats were left empty each game last season.

Salary

4 of 6

Salary is self-explanatory as rankings are based on how much each school pays its head coach.

Alabama10Nick Saban's salary is a whopping $6.1 million per year.
Texas9Mack Brown gets paid a ridiculous $5.2 million per year.
Oklahoma8Bob Stoops reels in $4.3 million a year.
USC7The 36-year-old Lane Kiffin gets $4 million a year to coach the Trojans.
LSU6Although it's hard to believe, Les Miles gets paid less than Lane Kiffin, at $3.8 million per year
Ohio State5Jim Tressel got paid $3.7 million before he got fired.
Michigan4Brady Hoke has earned every penny of his $3.5 million so far this season.
Notre Dame3The volcanic Brian Kelly gets approximately $3 million a year.
Florida2Will Muschamp gets paid $2.8 million a year to coach the Gators.
FSU1 Jimbo Fisher's salary is $2.25 million this year.

National Championship Contention

5 of 6

Rankings for national championship contention are based off the team's current ranking, recent championship contention and the number of championships the team has in its history.

LSU10LSU has four national championships in its history, and two in the past eight years.  LSU is currently ranked No. 1 in the country and is in prime position to win another national championship.
Alabama9Alabama has 13 national championships in its history and won the national championship in 2009.  Alabama is pretty much a lock to be in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, as it is ranked second in the country with no games left.
USC8Southern Cal has 10 national championships in its history and has won two in the past eight years.  Look for USC to be in contention for next year's national championship.
Oklahoma7Oklahoma has seven national championships in its history and won its last championship in 2000.  Oklahoma came into the season with high hopes, but after two tough losses it has found itself out of contention.
Florida6Florida has three national championships in its history, all coming within the last 15 years, including two in the last five years.
Ohio State5Ohio State has seven national championships in its history, with its most recent coming in 2002.  Ohio State has had a rough season this year, but OSU will be back on top soon.
Texas4Texas has 4 national championships in its history, with its most recent coming in 2005.  Much like OSU, Texas is going through a rough patch and will be back in contention within the next couple years.
Notre Dame3Notre Dame has 11 national championships in its history, with its most recent coming in 1988.  Notre Dame has come into the past couple seasons with high expectation that never really panned out, and the Irish will have to reverse that trend if they plan on contending for a national championship anytime soon.
Michigan2Michigan has won 11 national championships in its history, with its most recent coming in 1997.  After a few bad years, Michigan is finally back to national prominence as a BCS bowl may be in their near future.
FSU1Florida State has won two national championships in its history, both coming in the 1990s.  Although the Seminoles have had a disappointing season, the future looks bright for the Seminoles.
