Urban Meyer Rumors: Report Says Coveted Coach Met with Ohio State
After leading Florida to two national championships, it's no wonder why storied coach Urban Meyer has been kept under the microscope even after he retired from the Gators in January.
Meyer, who cited health and family priorities for his retirement, also said recently that no job offer from Ohio State had come down the pike, despite rumors to the contrary.
But Meyer never said anything about not meeting with Ohio State.
Clay Hall, the sports director of the ABC-6/FOX-28 TV affiliates in Columbus, tweeted on Monday that Meyer had met with Ohio State president Gordon Gee the prior week:
Ohio State, along with Penn State, is one of two troubled programs coming off a scandal that are in dire need of a lift from the doldrums.
While Penn State has played well this year despite the scandal, the departures of former head coach Jim Tressel and former quarterback Terrelle Pryor have undoubtedly hurt the Buckeyes this season.
The Buckeyes are 6-5 headed into their final game of the season on Nov. 29 against bitter rival Michigan. Despite defeating then-No. 16 Illinois and then-No. 15 Wisconsin, the defense has been inconsistent, and the absence of Pryor has been noticeable with rookie Braxton Miller under center. Of the two programs, Ohio State needs someone of Meyer's caliber the most.
It's worth noting that Ohio State wasn't the only program that Meyer reportedly visited recently. He also visited Arizona two weeks ago, according to The New York Times, but ultimately decided he wasn't interested in coaching the Wildcats.
That's where the rumors began to spread, and Ohio State and Penn State were the next two logical stops to coach next season.
As of now, there has been a lot more speculation that Meyer will end up at Ohio State rather than Penn State.
I'm guessing a legion of Buckeyes fans are hoping Gee whispered sweet nothings into Meyer's ears last week.
