Urban Meyer to Ohio State Rumors: Meyer Keeps Denying, but You Know He's Itching
Ever since Urban Meyer left the University of Florida he has been in the rumor mill to take over the next coaching position that opens up. It's just how college football works. The second a coach leaves, he is obliviously looking for another job (according to critics) at a bigger school or looking for a new challenge with a different team.
In Urban Meyer's case, the critics are probably right.
Meyer has already taken a year off from coaching as he is currently a ESPN analyst and although he has denied being offered the Ohio State job, you know he's drooling for them to present him one.
"“I'm in a good place right now mentally and physically. So if something happens with Ohio State, I'll have a decision to make," Meyer said. "But there has been no interview. There has been no offer to make a decision about.”
"
Maybe the rumors are false and Meyer is telling the truth regarding no job offer or interview. The Ohio State Buckeyes are still in the middle of a season and have a big rivalry game against Michigan this weekend. It wouldn't be fair to the players or head coach Luke Fickell to distract them with coaching rumors more than they already are.
But you know Meyer is itching for this position.
He is only 47 years old and has a ton of coaching left in him. He is considered one of the top coaches in the country and has a career record of 104-23. He won at Bowling Green State, Utah and was extremely successful at Florida winning 81 percent of his games and two National Championships.
He is a top recruiter that could easily bring in some of the top talent and turn Ohio State back into the National powerhouse they use to be. Although it may be tougher to recruit the players he would like, you can bet he'll be able to steal a few players from SEC country.
Although the Buckeyes may receive a punishment from the NCAA this would be nothing like what Penn State is currently going through. The distractions won't be there for Meyer to have to deal with as much as they would be if he took over for the Nittany Lions.
Meyer was born in Ohio and was a tight end and wide receivers coach for the Buckeyes for two seasons. Coaching the Buckeyes wouldn't just be a dream for him, it would also mean he is returning home.
Any other opening in the country wouldn't be as good of a fit as this one.
This Ohio State team is full of young talent that Meyer could mold into National Champions. Quarterback Braxton Miller would run his spread offense perfectly and could be his the next Tim Tebow.
He'll have the respect of the players that Fickell has apparently lost this season and he'll be able to bring in the coaching staff that he is most comfortable with.
So maybe Meyer hasn't been interviewed yet for the position, but once the season comes to an end that will change. He'll then have a decision to make and he will likely become the new head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
This position has his name written all over it.
