NFL Week 12 Waiver Wire: Advance Warning on Players Who Are Just Fool's Gold

John RozumNov 21, 2011

As the fantasy football regular season comes to a close in the next few weeks (varies by league), there will definitely be some moves made for a strong playoff push and higher seed.

However, since we are so deep into the season, the number of players to select from has significantly dwindled.

Therefore, just be sure to choose wisely.

Here are four players to stay away from if you're looking to enhance your team.

QB Rex Grossman: Washington Redskins

1 of 4

Oh, Rex Grossman, you silly fantasy football QB. Sometimes your numbers are off the charts, and other times it's just as impressive when the exact opposite occurs.

In other words, stay away from Grossman.

Last week against the Cowboys, Grossman played near flawlessly. He was 25-of-38 for 289 yards and two TDs, one INT and a rushing TD.

Unfortunately, we've also seen the worst from Grossman, such as in Washington's home game versus Philadelphia. In that game, he went 9-of-22 for just 143 yards and threw four INTs with no TDs.

If you add Grossman, you're toying with fate because it's a high risk but only good reward situation.

His WRs are not consistently solid, and the Redskins lack a ground game to help him out.

QB Blaine Gabbert: Jacksonville Jaguars

2 of 4

When Blaine Gabbert was given the keys to the car, it was uncertain as to whether that was the right decision.

It's not that the decision has backfired on Jacksonville, because they were going to struggle offensively, anyway.

However, Gabbert showed some promise early on, throwing only rare interceptions. Unfortunately, his TDs aren't very high, either.

Perhaps the most disappointing number is his less-than-50 percent completion percentage.

Sure, he doesn't have any legit targets but for a prospect of his caliber, below 50 percent is quite disappointing. That said, no matter how desperate for a QB you are, Gabbert should be avoided.

Jacksonville has the worst passing offense and although there's still a chance he can put up numbers from hitting RB Maurice Jones-Drew on screens and check-downs, it's highly unlikely.

To be honest, you're better off with Rex Grossman than Blaine Gabbert.

WR Joshua Cribbs: Cleveland Browns

3 of 4

Browns WR/return specialist Josh Cribbs is an excellent and versatile player for Cleveland, but he's not anything you'd want in fantasy football.

For one, the Browns struggle to throw the ball and even when they use Cribbs in the wildcat, it's not enough to be productive or to warrant any big fantasy numbers.

Even if you're in a league that gives the defense points for kick and punt return TDs, Cribbs shouldn't be considered.

Cleveland may have that field position advantage in real games, but changing the field position doesn't score you fantasy points.

If the Browns were more effective in the passing game, Cribbs would be a solid pickup, because then his versatility would be that much more dangerous and effective.

But since that is not the case, along with Cribbs not being a true receiver, you're limiting yourself in points with him.

He may be quite an effective player in real football, but not in fantasy.

RB Marion Barber: Chicago Bears

4 of 4

For as much as Marion Barber could contribute, Matt Forte is the every-down back and Barber is strictly there for when Forte needs a breather.

So in spite of Barber having scored five TDs this season (which is better than most backup RBs), you must choose someone else.

For one, he's limited to short yardage situations and even then, it's rare if he gets an opportunity.

Although he could make the Chicago offense a bit more dynamic, Mike Martz is a one-RB offensive coordinator.

When you have an offense that's not built for a two-back system, one guy's playing time will suffer.

We saw that with Marshall Faulk in St. Louis—no backups ever saw the field unless he got injured. Same deal in Chicago, regardless of any effect Barber could have in goal line situations.
