Survivor Series Fallout: How Bad Did WWE Make John Cena Look
John Cena has been on top of the wrestling (or sports entertainment) business for six years. He has rarely been made to look bad during his run on top and because of that he has drawn the ire of the internet wrestling community. WWE finally made Cena look human. He finally looked like a person who can indeed be beaten. But did WWE go too far? I think so.
In case you've been living under a rock (no pun intended) for the last seven months, Cena is scheduled for the main event of Wrestlemania to face The Rock in Rock's hometown of Miami. The Rock made his long-awaited return to the ring last night in the main event of Survivor Series, teaming with Cena against The Miz and R-Truth.

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
The crowd in Madison Square Garden was obviously going to be on the side of The Rock and was going to boo Cena even if he sneezed. Cena wasn't going to make any new fans, nor was he going to change anyone's opinion about him. But WWE didn't do him any favors by what happened after the match.
To the surprise of no one, The Rock hit the People's Elbow and won the match. Cena was halfway up the entrance way looking as if he wanted no part of The Rock's moment. The Rock calls him back in for a pose off on the top ropes, a contest that Cena had no chance at winning. He didn't even look confident while doing it. He looked as if he was at the mercy of The Rock and crowd at Madison Square Garden.
Whether that was by design, I don't know, but it didn't make him look good at all. The Rock and Cena exchanged some words that was followed by a Rock Bottom on Cena. Cena rolled out and looked as if he wanted no parts of The Rock.
This was no way to handle this. Don't get me wrong, I have been a proponent for a long time for Cena to actually look human, but in this case, he should be rolling. If you're building this to be the biggest match in a decade, where two of the biggest stars of their generations going at it you should make Cena look just as strong as The Rock, even if the fans don't believe it.
Now you intentionally make him look weaker than The Rock and there's no way in the world the fans are going to believe it now. This tells me that as much good WWE does they still lose touch with their fans from time to time. They don't understand that in the fans minds Cena is not as strong as The Rock so in turn you have to do whatever you can to put him on the same level as The Rock.
Instead, they make The Rock look like he could beat everyone on the roster by himself and make the guy they've hitched their wagon to for six years look like...a chump.
Now in the minds of the fans, they have lost what little respect they already had for Cena, which hurts the build up for this match to a certain extent. Now there is a lot of time to make up for it, but last night was a huge event where a lot more people are going to watch more so than, let's say, Elimination Chamber or TLC.
People are going to buy Wresltemania regardless, but you take away the intrigue if Cena does not look as strong as The Rock heading into it.
