WWE TLC 2011: The 5 Best Matches in the PPV's History
With the dust settling from the 25th anniversary of the Survivor Series, the attention of all WWE fans will turn to the next event, TLC—with no intentions of providing tender loving care when the event takes place next month.
The Tables, Ladders and Chairs event, which theme was voted on by WWE fans, replaced the long-running December pay-per-view Armageddon in 2009, after it held a place on the WWE PPV schedule from 1999 until 2008.
Even with a short event history, there have been some great matches in the two years of the TLC PPV. The use of tables, ladders and chairs highlight all five of these greatest matches.
2009: Christian vs. Shelton Benjamin
1 of 5In the first match of the TLC pay-per-view, Christian defended his ECW Championship against former WWE superstar Shelton Benjamin in a ladder match to kick off the show from San Antonio.
In the highlight of the match, Christian jumped from the top turnbuckle and put Benjamin through a ladder that was stretched from the ring apron to the announcer's table, propelling him to retain his ECW title.
2009: D-Generation X vs. Chris Jericho and Big Show
2 of 5In the main event of the first TLC pay-per-view, the Unified World Tag Team titles were on the line, as Chris Jericho and Big Show defended against Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a tag-team match.
After one superkick that sent Jericho plummeting to the outside from the shoulders of Big Show, Triple H and Michaels sent Show over the top rope to the floor after a combination of another superkick and a clothesline with a half-broken ladder.
With Jericho and Big Show neutralized, Triple H held up the half-broken ladder so Michaels could climb the rungs and pull down the tag titles for the duo's first and only run as champions as members of DX.
2010: Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Jack Swagger
3 of 5Similar to the inaugural TLC PPV, the 2010 edition of the event started with a ladder match for the Intercontinental title as Dolph Ziggler defended against both Kofi Kingston and Jack Swagger.
After all three competitors and even Vicki Guerrero made an attempt to grab the IC title, Kingston and Swagger dropped the title after unhooking it from the ceiling as they fought at the top of the ladder, allowing Ziggler to scurry over and retain the championship in true heel fashion.
2010: John Morrison vs. Sheamus
4 of 5In the second ladder match of the evening, John Morrison and Sheamus battled in a No. 1 contender’s bout to see which of the two would challenge then WWE champion The Miz at the Royal Rumble.
After some great back-and-forth between the two superstars, Morrison sent Sheamus falling off a ladder that was straddled between a second ladder and the ring ropes, through another ladder that was set up on the floor.
It was a rough looking bump for the fairly new Sheamus.
Morrison got his title shot against The Miz on RAW on January 3rd in a Falls Count Anywhere match, where he fell to The Miz and failed to capture his first WWE Championship.
2010: Edge vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Kane vs. Alberto Del Rio
5 of 5What was going to be a one-on-one match between Kane and Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship was changed to include former champion Rey Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio to make it a Fatal Four-Way TLC match.
As the four men beat on each other all across the arena in Houston with the aforementioned tables, ladders and chairs, the ultimate opportunist Edge climbed the ladder and pulled down the championship for his 11th and final world title run in his career before retiring this past April.
