WWE Survivor Series 2011: Why CM Punk's Championship Win Was Predictable

David LevinNov 21, 2011

He came to the ring with a purpose. He would not be denied. And in the end, CM Punk did what all of us thought he would do in capturing the WWE Heavyweight Title.

Stop, did I miss something?

I thought that was what we wanted him to do. We wanted our anti-hero back. We wanted a charismatic enigma (sorry, Jeff Hardy) to come back to the WWE in a way that we remembered him, all brash and full of life and someone who right now is the best in the business.

Sorry, Rock. You will have to step aside for this one.

Now, just when we have our champion in place and some lunatic "aristocrat" on the outside looking in, the win may have been too predictable. We knew it was coming. We knew it would happen and we knew the consequences.

And we should not be complaining.

Punk needed this win. So did Alberto Del Rio. While Del Rio needed it to remain relevant, Punk needed the win to rule the WWE.

The bond between ADR and John Laurinaitis may be part of a "takeover attempt" and still could remain part of a storyline, but for now the WWE needed stability with its title reign. Punk provides that and most of all, fans love him.

The reason Punk's victory was predictable was simple, even Laurinaitis stated it. ADR had become too vanilla and transparent and needed to do something to strengthen his stance. Being champion is one thing, but being a champion with no pull is another.

He was boring.

Punk is everything ADR is not—he lights up the arena. Del Rio puts a great fog on the scene. And because John Cena looks to be in a state of flux, the fans need something to believe in other than a "once in a while" Rock showing up to let everyone know what he is cooking.

Cena was the "star" who made everything alright. Now, fans boo him and cheer the challengers.

Punk is cheered wherever he goes. He is the "rock star" we need. He is the WWE's Tim Tebow in a sense.

So yes, the win was predictable for all the right reasons. And moving forward, the likes of Dolph Ziggler, R-Truth and The Miz will all get a chance to see if they are better than our anti-hero, the same guy who helped put them over numerous times.

It's a predictable win we can all agree on.
