Survivor Series 2011: WWE Will Kill Rock and Cena's WrestleMania Momentum

Adam WellsNov 20, 2011

Finally!

That is the sentiment that many WWE fans have been feeling today as we are just hours away from The Rock's in-ring return after nearly eight years away. The fact that he is teaming up with John Cena only adds to the drama and tension.

But before we go calling this a brilliant move and one that will bring WWE back to prominence in the wrestling community, I am going to burst some bubbles. I believe that not only will this match not match the hype, but it is also going to ruin all the positive momentum that Rock and Cena had going for WrestleMania.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want it to happen. I want Rock and Cena to have the best possible match that they can tonight and increase the buzz for WrestleMania tenfold. The problem is that we have been burned by terrible storylines and buildup for shows for so long that it is wrong to expect things to change.

For example, the best excuse that WWE could come up with to have Rock come back and wrestle on this show was because his twitter followers told him that he should.

Perhaps I am being naive, but considering the dynamic between Rock and Cena, wouldn't you expect more fans to tell him not to help Cena under any circumstance and let him suffer?

In addition to that, you had the terrible conclusion to Raw last week. You remember, when Rock and Cena were more interested in plugging slogans to get them to trend on twitter than actually building up their match.

The buzz for this feud is already fading, so what is to stop it from dwindling completely between now and April. That is an eternity in WWE, and they have screwed big matches up in a lot less time.

Two years ago, Bret Hart returned and agreed to wrestle Vince McMahon at WrestleMania. That was supposed to be a money angle, but because the creative team—led by McMahon—decided to make the story about something besides Montreal and 1997.

No one was interested.

That was the easiest story in the world to tell and WWE couldn't get that right, so why will Rock and Cena be any different?

The only finish tonight that will give me some semblance of hope is if Cena turns on Rock and costs him the match. It's not a complete heel turn because he still has to sell shirts to kids, but it can add another wrinkle to the rivalry that is missing.

I don't expect that to happen because WWE rarely does the right thing anymore. So for all the buzz, anticipation and expectations that surround Rock, Cena, Survivor Series and WrestleMania, I would just say to keep your hopes low so as not to be too disappointed.

Rock deserves better for his first match back, the fans deserve better because it is Rock's first match back and WrestleMania deserves better because it has the potential to be the biggest show in company history.

But based on the television story that has been presented, I don't see how WWE doesn't screw the whole thing up starting tonight.
