UFC 139 Results: Dan Henderson's Success Won't Carry Against Jon Jones

Justin WeltonNov 20, 2011

Dan Henderson outlasted Mauricio “Shogun” Rua with a unanimous decision at UFC 139 on Saturday night in his return to the UFC.

Henderson has set himself up for a possible light heavyweight title fight against Jon Jones in the future.

If these two fighters match up, Henderson’s UFC 139 success would be short-lived because Jones would tear him to pieces.

Jones (14-1) and his 84.5-inch reach is beyond ridiculous. It is one of the most potent weapons in the history of the UFC.

Competitors can’t get anywhere near him. Henderson wouldn’t stand a chance with a reach of 71 inches.

Henderson (29-8) wouldn’t be able to use his powerful striking or tremendous clinch against Jones and his 6’4”, 205-pound frame partly because Jones wouldn’t allow him to get close enough.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson wanted to brawl with Jones and struggled to have any type of success because of his incredible reach and overall physical attributes. Henderson would have to stay as far away from that game plan as humanly possible.

Jones continues to get better every time he steps in the octagon—it’s scary. Not only is he solid at landing shots with his reach, but he can make you tap at any point in the match.

After seeing what he did to Jackson, one would think that maybe we saw him at his pinnacle.

Not so fast.

We don’t know just how good this kid can be. He could be the Tiger Woods (in his prime) of the UFC.

Henderson is a great fighter with a complete skill set, but Jones is out-of-this-world good. He may be the best fighter to ever participate in the sport when his career is over.

Jones would have an unbelievable youth advantage at just 24 years old, compared to Henderson’s 41 years of age with Henderson having the experience edge obviously. I’d take the youthfulness any day.

The advantage would go to Jones if this fight would go in the later rounds.

Henderson can be defeated and his record proves that. Jones’ only defeat came to Matt Hamill by illegal blows in 2009.

He has yet to be defeated in the conventional way. There is a reason for that.

He’s that good.

We have your classic example of one guy (Henderson) on the tail end of his career and another (Jones) getting ready to enter his prime.

Jones would use his ridiculous reach, size and overall skill set to maintain the rights of being the best pound-for-pound light heavyweight champion in the world.
