Jim Boeheim Video: Watch Syracuse Head Coach Defend Accused Bernie Fine

Brian MaziqueNov 20, 2011

At a time when most fans would prefer to concentrate on the happenings in the field or court of play, the collegiate sports world is being rocked with a one-two combination of disturbing allegations.

Most of us have heard or are acquainted with the Jerry Sandusky situation at Penn State; now another storied institution and athletic program is under fire.

A former ball boy, Bobby Davis, is among two former Syracuse ball boys accusing longtime Syracuse basketball assistant coach Bernie Fine of sexually molesting them. Mike Lang, who is now 45, is the other alleged victim.

If the allegations here as well as the ones levied against Penn State are true, this implies there could be a real problem and abuse of power in big-time collegiate athletics.

Though we can't automatically assume this is the case based on such a small sample size, it is hard not to wonder if these types of things are occurring at other institutions.

Legendary Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim has shown no hesitation to support his long time assistant and friend of over 50 years. He has gone as far as to call them accuser, Davis, a liar. He is not alone—former Syracuse' great Rony Seikaly chimed in with a similar notion.

In the video, Davis responds to that notion by saying "many people think they know Bernie, but they don't."

There is even a disturbing part of the video where he seems to catch himself from saying "I've been in his be-, I've been in his house." It sounds like he is going to say bed, but then decides to use less descriptive language.

If the victim is truthful, recalling events like that from his childhood must be painful.

New York law experts have said that as of now, the accuser's have neither a strong criminal or civil case.

As of now, the NCAA and law enforcement will conduct a full investigation. Based on their findings, a decision will be made.

For now, Fine is on administrative leave, and we are left feeling uncomfortably diverted from the beauty of college sports.
