Urban Meyer: Ohio State? Penn State? Just Wait for the Notre Dame Job

William PenfieldNov 20, 2011

Urban Meyer has been tied to a few college football head coaching jobs recently. Of most note, Ohio State and Penn State.

We all know what happened at Penn State and the only reason we aren't still talking about what happened at Ohio State is because of what happened at Penn State.

Both programs are in the midst of scandals in their own right, Penn State's much more serious, making two of the nations most intriguing jobs not so intriguing anymore.

Ohio State is still awaiting a possible postseason ban from the NCAA in regards to its violations and it would be hard to see Meyer wanting to take over a program in the middle of a child molestation scandal.

Meyer would be praised if he were to take either job and rebuild either program, but at what cost?

If the Buckeyes end up getting a postseason ban for their "failure to monitor" sanction, they would be a lame duck program for at least a year. And no one knows what is to come in Happy Valley, as it could be years before the investigation of Sandusky is complete.

But their is one program he could take over and return to prominence to enter the ranks of immortality in college football, Notre Dame.

It would be a match made in heaven as Meyer proclaimed the Irish head coaching position his dream job back in 2008.

Of course their is one problem with that thought, the Irish still have a head coach in just his second year at the helm of the program in Brian Kelly.

But recent history has told us that Notre Dame head coaches don't last much longer than four years, and with Kelly in his second, he could be halfway to the end.

Bob Davie lasted just over four years from 1997 to three games into the 2001 season. Tyrone Willingham lasted just three seasons after taking over for Davie. Charlie Weis was run out of South Bend after five years at the helm and probably only lasted that long due to the massive amount of money he was guaranteed.

The average tenure of the last three Irish coaches is just about four years. Meyer has good gig at ESPN; I'm sure he can wait a couple more years for Brian Kelly to be fired so he can take his dream job once and for all.
