BCS Rankings: Should Pollsters Just Give an Unbeaten Houston Team a Shot?
After a weekend slate of games that saw the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7 teams in the country fall to defeat, is it finally time for the only other undefeated team in college football besides LSU to get a shot at the big boys?
I’m talking about the current No. 11 team in the country, the Houston Cougars.
Before anyone says the obvious, I know that Case Keenum and the Cougars are a big fish in a little pond as they are best team in Conference USA which doesn’t mean a lot when you have the likes of the SEC, Big Ten and the Big 12.
While their conference might not be the toughest, Houston is a team that can give LSU some problems if the team could break through the glass ceiling of being the non-AQ school looking in the polls.
You might be shocked at the fact that I said that Houston could maybe hang with the No. 1 team in the country and I have a good example to back up my statement.
If you go back and look at LSU’s game in September against West Virginia and their Dana Holgorsen-led offense, the Tigers gave up the most yards to the Mountaineers than any other opponent in 2011 as WVU racked up over 530 yards of total offense.
Now if you look at Houston and Case Keenum, the offensive mindset of the Cougars is very close to the style of play that WVU as both programs run an “Air Raid” offense which was very effective back in September.
Do I believe that Houston could beat LSU if the two teams could meet in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans in January? The Cougars would give the Tigers a little more than they would expect, but LSU would win 10 times out of 10 if the two teams played on the field this season.
With every team ahead of Houston in the standings having one more loss than them, the voters should give the Cougars a shot in a perfect world. While this isn’t that perfect world, we might have that perfect situation in the future but for now, we continue with the broken system that is the BCS.
