UFC 139 Results: Michael McDonald Isn't Far From Becoming a Contender

First LastNov 19, 2011

UFC bantamweight prospect Michael McDonald picked up his biggest victory to-date after knocking out Alex Soto in just 56 seconds of the very first round in a UFC 139 undercard bout.

At 14-1, the 20-year-old is quickly making a name for himself in the UFC's bantamweight division. He is now 3-0 in the UFC with wins over Soto, Chris Cariaso and Edwin Figueroa.

The short-list of contenders in the 135 pound weight class includes fighters like Urijah Faber, Brian Bowles, Scott Jorgensen and Joseph Benavidez. UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is always looking for new challengers, and McDonald could be less than two years from getting his chance at UFC gold.

McDonald might not be ready for the top five of the division just yet, but he is ready to take a step up against a top 10 fighter. Even if he comes up short, it would be a valuable learning experience for him and his progression as a fighter.

Some of the top 10 contenders include former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres, as well as contenders like Renan Barao, Demetrious Johnson and Brad Pickett.

McDonald probably won't get any of them for his next fight, but with performances like tonight, it will be hard to keep him from getting his chance against one in 2012.
