UFC 139 Results: What We Learned from Ryan Bader vs. Jason Brilz
Light heavyweight Ryan Bader (13-2) got a much-needed victory over another former NCAA wrestler in Jason Brilz (18-5) on the Spike TV portion of UFC 139. He knocked out Brilz at 1:17 of the very first round to give him his first victory in 2011.
What we'll remember about this fight: Like last week's fight with Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, the punch you don't see can always be the most devastating. After landing his right hand behind the ear, Brilz was out and face-first on the canvas.
What we learned about Ryan Bader: Bader showed he could come back from losing not one, but two back-to-back fights against Jon Jones and Tito Ortiz, while also being able to overcome the adversity of defeat. He didn't just look for an easy victory, he really took the fight to Brilz and landed his powerful right hand to get the decisive finish he needed.
What we learned about Jason Brilz: This was Brilz's second consecutive knockout loss in a row, and his last one came in only 20 seconds against Vladimir Matyushenko. This one didn't last much longer, and we've probably seen the last of Brilz inside the Octagon. It's his fourth loss in the UFC with his others coming against Eliot Marshall ad Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
What's next for Bader? The winner of the upcoming Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexander Gustafsson bout.
What's next for Brilz? He will probably receive his walking papers after three consecutive losses, but he could find fights in other MMA organizations. He will be in a similar position to Keith Jardine.
