BCS Rankings Week 13: Clemson and Oklahoma State Will Drop Like Stones
The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Clemson Tigers should be downright embarrassed about the fact that they lost to unranked teams, and I have a feeling their place in the BCS rankings will be just as abysmal as their losses.
I'm not saying that these teams are going to fall out of the rankings in general, but the fact that they lost to schools that should have had no opportunity to beat them is just silly.
I understand that any team can beat any other team on "any given Sunday," or Friday and Saturday in these cases, but this should be inexcusable.
There was so much on the line for both of these teams, and not that it's all lost, but the true potential of their seasons have certainly diminished.
Let's break them down:
Oklahoma State
The Cowboys came into this game ranked No. 2 in the country and undefeated at 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the Big 12.
All they had to do was beat the 5-4 Iowa State Cyclones and Oklahoma next week, and they would have a clear shot at LSU and the national championship game.
The Oklahoma matchup was the game that everybody was thinking about, and the Cowboys obviously got caught in a trap game.
It took the Cyclones two overtimes to do it, but they outmatched the Cowboys 37-31 and pulled off the upset of the year.
They forced Brandon Weeden into three interceptions, and racked up 192 yards on the ground and 376 through the air, led by freshman quarterback Jared Barnett.
What many people saw as an easy win on the road to Oklahoma and a possible national championship turned into one of the all-time great upsets.
The Cowboys still have a shot, but I have to wonder how losing to an unranked opponent will impact their rankings. I don't expect it will be good.
Clemson
There was a time this season where Clemson was 8-0 with wins over ranked Auburn, Florida State and Virginia Tech, and I felt they were a possible national contender.
Their loss to unranked Georgia Tech really dimmed those hopes, but they still had a No. 7 ranking to show for it, and Georgia Tech isn't half bad.
Losing to 6-5 North Carolina State is simply unacceptable, and considering it's their second loss to an unranked opponent and the nature of the loss, I see Clemson slipping far down the rankings.
They didn't just lose, they got destroyed 37-13.
The Wolfpack held Tajh Boyd to just 238 yards and no touchdowns, and picked him off twice.
Offensively, they were all over the Tigers, passing for 253 yards and running for 145.
All-in-all, this is the second horrible loss the Tigers have suffered this season, but this one was far too bad to pass up.
Conclusion
Both Oklahoma State and Clemson felt the bite of the underdog, and I expect that will show in the latest BCS rankings.
