UFC 139 Results: Matt Brown's Downward Spiral Continues vs. Seth Baczynski
Matt Brown was favored against Seth Baczynski at UFC 139, but came out on the losing end of a second-round submission. In his past five fights, Brown has lost four times with all of them coming via submission maneuvers by his opponent.
His career record now stands at a mediocre 12-11. It's hard to imagine him bouncing back unless he starts showing more aggressiveness. Baczynski was just recently re-signed by UFC and fought like he had something to prove. Brown never matched that intensity.
And it's not like he's been battling elite fighters, either.
Brown's previous three losses came against Ricardo Almeida, Chris Lytle and Brian Foster. If he can't hang with those guys, how does he expect to compete with welterweight division powerhouses like Georges St. Pierre, Jake Shields or Josh Koscheck?
Hopefully another loss opens his eyes to the flaws in his approach. If he doesn't show improvement in his next time out, it will be time to start wondering about his future.
It's tough to say that about somebody who will be turning 31 in January, but it's a tough business and a decline usually comes pretty swiftly. Brown will need to start stringing together some wins if he hopes to prove that isn't happening to him.
He's one of the sport's good guys. His career was teetering on the brink of collapse before Ultimate Fighter came around to save it. Now it will be up to him to save it himself this time. Only time will tell if he's up to the task.
If Brown's going to complete that comeback, priority No. 1 needs to be getting off to better starts. Opponents have felt no fear against him recently and that mental edge is key in any MMA fight.
While it's not too late for Brown to turn things around, time is certainly running low.
