UFC 139 Results: Matt Brown Must Find Positives from Loss to Seth Baczynski
Matt Brown lost his fight vs. Seth Baczynski via a second round submission today. Still, not all losses are treated the same, and this one was far better than most.
At the professional ranks, it's hard to be too encouraged with any kind of defeat. Ideally, two professionals should be fighting at the same level, and while someone is going to lose every fight, that person shouldn't be especially enthused when that happens.
But even though a second round submission defeat doesn't look all that good from the outside looking in, anyone who watched Matt Brown's loss against Seth Baczynski would know that Brown spent a lot of time as the aggressor in the fight.
Even when he was put in the hold that ultimately forced him to submit, he was on top. Baczynski simply made a nice move that got Brown trapped. He eventually had no choice but to submit.
That's simply a situation where your opponent deserves all the credit for winning. That doesn't help your overall record, but it does set up well for future fights. Looking back, Brown will know that he did well in this fight, he just left himself temporarily vulnerable against an opportunistic opponent.
That happens in sports, particularly combat sports. It doesn't take much to completely turn the tide, and that's what Brown fell victim to.
The positives are simple. He was on top of a very good fighter for a long time. Brown wasn't at all far off from winning that fight on his own, he just couldn't close the deal.
In a weird way, it's almost the ideal fight to build on. Sure, you want to win, but you want to do well enough, which he did. But what you also want is to have something weak to build on and make it a strength.
Maybe the next opponent will see that and think that they can a exploit a weakness. If Brown trains well, he can turn that weakness into a strength and win his next fight.
Again, nothing about a loss is very pleasing, but it doesn't mean that no positives can be generated.
