UFC 139 Results: Win Over Matt Brown Means Little for Seth Baczynski's Prospects
Seth Baczynski stretched his winning streak to four matches and improved his overall record to 15-6 with an impressive victory over Matt Brown in a welterweight bout at UFC 139. Despite that, it's important not to overreact to Baczynski's latest win.
Baczynski certainly seems to have the skill set needed to succeed, but his matchup with Brown was simply tailor made for his fighting style. Of Baczynski's 15 career wins, 10 have been via submission. That is how he won on Saturday night as he used a snug guillotine choke to defeat Brown.
As good as he looked in the fight, Brown is very susceptible to being submitted. He's certainly a tough competitor, but his career mark is just 12-11 after his latest loss, and an incredible nine of those losses have been by submission.
With that in mind, Brown was at a huge disadvantage against a submission specialist. You have to give Baczynski some credit for carrying out his strategy to perfection, but this is a fight that he was supposed to win. Because of that, it shouldn't have much bearing on his opportunities moving forward.
Some may be inclined to move Baczynski up the card since Brown is a bit of a name, but Brown is also a very flawed fighter. Brown may be a "super gnarly dude" as Baczynski said in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, but he's also a very beatable opponent.
Baczynski is in his prime at 29 years old and still has the potential to get better, but we shouldn't read too much into his win over Brown. It's great that Baczynski took care of his business like he was supposed to, but he shouldn't get too many pats on the back after exploiting an easy matchup.
