Urban Meyer Shouldn't Let Mounting Public Pressure Push Him into Decsion
Urban Meyer is being rumored as a potential candidate for the head coaching job at Ohio State, and as is the case with these types of things, people are going to continue to press him on what his future plans are. Of all people, Meyer should be careful to not let these pressures get to him.
Today he was asked on ESPN's broadcast of the Nebraska-Michigan game about the job and he declined to comment, other than saying there had not been a deal reached or offered. Somehow, in today's world of asking questions until you get the answer you want, I don't think that will be the end of it.
Let's not forget the reason Meyer took a vacation from coaching in the first place. In 2009 he had to step down temporarily due to the toll that the stress of coaching was taking on his body. He had to be checked into the hospital due to chest pains and dehydration.
He had been suffering from esophageal spasms and severe headaches for a while. Though he coached for another year, he stepped aside in 2010.
There's no question he's a great coach. His legacy speaks for itself.
During his time in Utah he was the first coach to lead a non-automatic qualifier to a BCS Bowl when he coached the Utes to an undefeated 12-0 season, and then beat the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Fiesta Bowl.
At Florida he won two BCS National Championships in 2006 and 2008.
Whether he can come back to coaching is not an issue. He absolutely can. There's not much doubt that he could have the Ohio State job, or for that matter the Penn State job, if he were to just say the words "I want to coach at ______ State."
It's a matter of whether he wants to, and whether he wants to risk his health. Some people are going to get bothered about his indirect answers, but hopefully ignore that. He can push all the noise aside and make a decision based on his health and family first about whether he wants to coach again at all before he starts worrying over where.
