Urban Meyer to Ohio State Rumors: 4 Reasons This Marriage Might Never Happen

Jordan CalfeeNov 19, 2011

The rumors of Urban Meyer taking the head coaching job with the Ohio State Buckeyes have been swirling around all day, despite Meyer shooting them down himself.

Even with his denial, speculation that Meyer will eventually take the job is rampant. I, however, am not buying it. I don't think Meyer will return to the coaching world just a year after retiring from the Florida Gators.

I think Ohio State would jump at the chance to get Meyer. I just don't think Meyer would be receptive to taking that job at this point. Here's why.

He's Comfortable in the Broadcasting Booth

He might not be getting paid the $3 million a year he was making with the Florida Gators, but Urban Meyer is getting handsomely compensated for his expert analysis by ESPN, I can promise you that.

There are a lot of advantages to broadcasting. Meyer can stay in college football without all the stresses of being on the sideline. What's more, what was once a full-time job (with offseason recruiting and practices) now begins in August and ends in January.

Ohio State Isn't Much Better Than Florida

Sure, the head coaching job with the Ohio State Buckeyes is a highly sought after position. But I don't think it's any better than the head coaching job with the Florida Gators.

Florida is a hot-bed for recruiting and it's in the SEC (college football's premier conference). It doesn't have the 100,000 capacity stadium like the Horseshoe, but the Swamp isn't exactly small at 88,000.

I just don't see why Urban Meyer would come back for what would seem like a lateral movement, just a year after leaving Florida.

He Hasn't Had Much Time off

Urban Meyer initially took a leave of absence after the 2009 season, and retired for good after last year because of health problems and his desire to spend more time with his family.

It would seem awfully fickle if he took a different head coaching job just a year later. His health problems certainly won't have abated this quickly, and he hasn't had much time to spend with his family. I think if he wanted to be back in college coaching already, he wouldn't have left the Florida Gators after last season.

I think Meyer will wait at least a year or two before returning to coaching, if for no other reason than it would make him look indecisive (and certainly infuriate every Florida fan) if he came back this quickly.

The Stresses Wouldn't Be Any Less

If Meyer was going to come back now, I would imagine he would go to a lower profile school where the pressures aren't so high and his health problems wouldn't be re-aggravated by the excessive stress.

The expectations at Ohio State are just as high as they are at Florida. Being the head football coach at any college program is stressful, but places like Ohio State (and Florida) are ridiculous.

Meyer is just a year away from making the (pretty significant) decision that the anxieties of coaching were too much for him. I can't imagine he's reversed his position this quickly.
