Urban Meyer Ohio State: Why Former Florida Coach Must Stay Away from Columbus

Michael DixonNov 19, 2011

It makes sense that fans of struggling teams everywhere would want Urban Meyer. I mean, who wouldn't? He's a two-time National Champion at Florida. While he was at Utah, the Utes became the first non-BCS conference team to earn a spot in a BCS game. And they went on to win that game.

So, his resume really speaks for itself. It makes sense that place like Ohio State, who's used to at least being a BCS team, would look for a change after such a disappointing season.

Meyer is working for ESPN as a color man for college football. During Saturday's game between Nebraska and Michigan, Meyer addressed rumors and reports that he had accepted a position at Ohio State.

The Orlando Sentinel was one outlet to report that Meyer had actually taken that job, their report came from SportsbyBrooks.

For Meyer's sake, I hope that what he said on Saturday in the above video is true.

Christine Brennan of USA Today quoted Meyer as saying the following when he left Florida after the 2010 season.

"

At this time in my life, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. After spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I've been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports.

"

With two National Championships in six years, he certainly wasn't resigning because the team wasn't any good. In terms of winning titles, the job at Florida is about the best job in the country.

It's not that Ohio State is a bad job for that, but it doesn't quite stack up the Florida. The recent numbers suggest that.

Still, the job is quite demanding. All of the reasons Meyer cited above for leaving Florida would still apply at Ohio State.

Now, the money would be huge at Ohio State, but it's hard to imagine Meyer has any great financial needs.

No, Meyer is best suited to stay away from the sidelines for a long time, if not permanently. Ohio State is a fantastic job but it's too much of a drain.

On top of that, to the best of my knowledge, Ohio State has yet to fire their current head coach, Luke Fickell. Meyer, or any coach, should probably wait until that happens before accepting a position with the Buckeyes.
