BCS Rankings: Oklahoma State's Loss Sets Up LSU vs. Alabama Rematch
An already convoluted BCS national title picture just got more complicated with the loss of No. 2 Oklahoma State to unranked Iowa State on Thursday.
With the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 3 in the rankings, the natural progression will be that the Tide slide back up to No. 2 when OK State drops.
While teams like Oregon and Oklahoma have a reasonable point as to why they should be the team at No. 2, the strength of the SEC can’t be undervalued.
The BCS computers take strength of schedule into consideration, and while both Oregon and Alabama have one loss to No. 1 ranked LSU, it is the Crimson Tide with a far harder schedule.
After opening the season with a loss to LSU, Oregon has run the table, but only two of those teams have been ranked. Alabama has beaten three ranked teams and faces another in the last week of the season against Auburn.
The whole idea of these BCS computers was that they would take the guesswork out of these situations, but since their involvement in major college football decisions, polls are even harder to interpret and predict.
With the tougher schedule, the Crimson Tide will become the No. 2 team in the nation and set up the rematch that everyone has been clamoring for since LSU beat Alabama 9-6 in overtime on November 5.
Since that epic battle, college football fans across the country have been waiting to see if the BCS rankings would shake out for a possible rematch.
With the Oklahoma State loss, all the signs point to the Crimson Tide moving to No. 2 and setting up what could be the most anticipated National Championships in years.
That is, if both teams win out.
