WWE: Will CM Punk Eventually Replace John Cena as the Company's Top Superstar?
He is the voice of the voiceless. His promos are the stuff of legend, and when he speaks, everyone stops to listen. He has been on the roll of a lifetime, and he is the hottest wrestler in the business.
He is CM Punk, and he is the biggest Superstar in WWE.
Okay, the second biggest. At least for now.

It’s been a surreal turn of events for Punk. He went from being the guy on his way out, a worker who could not buy a win, to being the must-see Superstar who has replaced Randy Orton on the WWE food chain.
That’s not to discredit Orton, or anything that he is doing on SmackDown. His feuds with Christian and Cody Rhodes were each extremely well done and very entertaining. He is definitely on his game, and brings it every night he is in the ring.
But, for the longest time, it was all about two guys in WWE. Two guys who were the talk of the business, one was the WWE Champion, and one was the World Champion, and everyone else was a distant second.
I’m talking of course about Orton and John Cena, the man who Punk is threatening to dethrone as the No. 1 star in the company.
But, we’ll get to that in a bit.
Every week it was the same thing. Cena wins. Orton wins. Cena wins. Orton wins.
You get the picture.
It became so monotonous that fans began to reach their boiling point, venting their frustrations online day after day, hoping that someone would listen, and begin to change the status quo in WWE before we all went crazy.
That someone was CM Punk, who took up the challenge and decided to fight for all of us.
Actually, it was just booked that way. Punk just went with the program. But, it felt as though it was real, didn’t it? And, it still feels that way right now.
Every time Punk opens his mouth, he kills it. He has a way about him that is extremely relatable, and when he gives that sly grin to the camera, it’s as if he is staring right at you, letting you know that he’s above any silly situation they can put him in.
He’s better than all of it, and he shows it in a way that is not arrogant, or condescending, and that is just another part of his appeal.
Fans feel like they know him, and believe that he’s got it all figured out. He is one of us, and realizes that he owes his revitalized career to us. We are emotionally invested, to a great degree, in Punk’s success, because of the support that was given to him long before WWE gave him a second chance.
To put it simply, we love the fact that he is in a top spot in the company, and we feel responsible for him being in that spot.
How many fans can honestly say that about John Cena?
That’s right, he is the aforementioned biggest Superstar in WWE, the man sitting above Punk in the pecking order, and the man who is given the responsibility of carrying WWE on his shoulders. He is the top dog, and everyone else comes in a distant second.
Hey John, don’t look now, but CM Punk breathing down your neck. Get used to it, because he has nearly caught up to you.
If Punk has indeed topped Orton in the minds of fans, then presumably he is now the second part of the two-man equation ruling WWE.
How does that feel to you? Do you buy Punk as the legitimate second fiddle in the company? Is it perhaps too soon to ask that question, or is it appropriate for the times?
Or should we just skip to the obvious question at hand, and ask if it’s time to recognize Punk as the No. 1 draw in the company?
Cena has a lot going for him in that debate. He has a longer track record of being the top man, it’s a position he’s very comfortable in. He has also been featured much more heavily on WWE programming than Punk ever has through the years, and he hasn’t lost a match cleanly since 2008.
Don’t go researching that last fact, I’m just kidding.
Of course, if it were true, would you really be all that surprised?
The key to being a John Cena, a Triple H, or anyone else who has been placed in the prime-time spot in WWE, is that he be virtually untouchable.
Not untouchable in terms of having little physical contact against opponents, but more along the lines of wins and losses.
After all, if the face of the company can’t appear stronger than the rest of the roster, then he’s not really the face of the company. In Cena’s case, and the way he’s been booked over the years, he’s not just stronger and better than the rest of the locker room, he’s a king.
A king with camo shorts and gaudy T-Shirt, but a king nonetheless.
But, perhaps it’s time for that king to be overthrown, and a new ruling class come to power.
King Punk? Has a nice ring to it, right?
Perhaps it’s not necessary for John to go anywhere. During any given time in WWE history, the top tier of guys have included anywhere from two to five main Superstars, and more.
Maybe Punk’s ascension to the level he’s now on is just an added bonus to the two Superstars that fans already respect, or hate, whatever the case may be.
Maybe it’s best to just consider Punk’s situation as “the more the merrier,” and let him have his fun as No. 3, or the No. 2 that many, including myself, feel that he is.
But for those fans who feel that Punk’s time is now, the possibility of him surpassing Cena is very real
Maybe surreal is more like it.
