BCS Rankings: Members Finally Coming to Senses with Major Proposed Changes
Finally it seems like those of you who want a “Death” to the Bowl Championship Series may get your wish.
It looks like at recent meetings in San Francisco there were talks about how to change the entire landscape of how a national champion is crowned in college football. According to ESPN.com’s Gene Wojciechowski:
"“According to sources with direct knowledge of meetings held in San Francisco earlier this week, the suggested change calls for the BCS to sever its direct ties with the so-called BCS bowls—the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Discover Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio—and concentrate solely on arranging a No. 1 vs. No. 2 national championship matchup.
In addition, the BCS title game could potentially be bided out to non-traditional sites, such as Jerry Jones' Cowboys Stadium.
The proposal also would eliminate automatic BCS bowl qualifying status currently given to the six major conferences. All conferences would be free to make their own deals with the 34 other existing bowls.”
"
Wow, did you get all of that?
That means those of you who hate seeing a team from the Big East get crushed by an SEC team will no longer have to watch that game. Or for example, last year’s Orange Bowl that saw the Pac-12’s Stanford blow out the ACC champion Virginia Tech 40-14.
Using this proposed method would mean that teams ranging from Alabama to Utah State have an equal chance at playing for college football’s championship in January. It also means that if a conference has more than two teams that finish in the Top 10, they all have a chance at getting an invitation to one of the best bowl games.
This proposed method will not make everyone happy, as people from SEC schools will get upset that an undefeated school from the MAC may get a title shot over a one-loss LSU, Arkansas, Alabama or Georgia.
However, what we need to take away from this is that they are talking. The BCS Members see schools ditching their conferences just so they can play in a better football conference.
For example, why is Boise State looking to play in the Big East? Last time I checked a trip to Idaho from Connecticut will take—with layovers—almost 12 hours to complete.
The members see a problem in the system and instead of burying their heads in the sand they are looking to fix the problem. Have some faith in what they are trying to do, as what was proposed above is just that, a proposal. In that report from Wojciechowski, he says “There also were discussions that centered on keeping the core of the BCS system, but with additional tweaks. One such tweak would be to simply eliminate AQ status.”
So we are not there yet, but we are making progress. If there are any changes it will go into affect after the bowl cycle ends in 2013.
We are making progress people, good or bad, we are making progress to a better way to determine college football’s national champion.
