UFC 139: The 'H' Bomb and the 11 Best Signature Moves in the UFC Today
Back in the early part of the 2000's, many fans would sit on the edge of their seats waiting for a trademark right hand from Chuck Liddell or a devastating head kick from Mirko Cro Cop.
Those fighters had signature moves that made their fights even more fun to watch than the rest, mostly because it was like waiting for a ticking time bomb to go off.
While both of these MMA legends have since retired, there is no shortage of fighters that have the potential to land a trademarked strike or submission at any second, and the moves on this list are some of the best the sport has to offer.
Dan Henderson's "H" Bomb
1 of 11Many fighters have been hit by Dan Henderson’s devastating right hand, but few have remained conscious long enough to tell you what it feels like.
Since Mirko Cro Cop has officially retired, I feel confident enough to say that Henderson now possesses the single most intimidating weapon in MMA, and if any fighter runs into the pillowcase full of bricks that Hendo has attached to his wrist, expect to see Henderson’s hand being raised shortly after.
Rousimar Palhares' Leg Locks
2 of 11When Rousimar Palhares grabs a hold of one of your legs, it means tap or risk losing the limb in the next five seconds.
Palhares goes after a leg lock the same way a fat kid goes after his birthday cake, and once he grabs on to it, he’s not letting go until the referee pulls him off.
And I do mean "pulls him off," as Palhares has a knack for holding onto submissions a bit too long.
Dennis Siver's Spinning Back Kick
3 of 11This one hasn’t been used very often lately, but early in his UFC career, Dennis Siver was known for his trademark spinning back kick.
Siver took out both Nate Mohr and Paul Kelly with the kick, which instantly made him a favorite of UFC commentator Joe Rogan, but he has been reluctant to use it in recent fights, probably because opponents are now looking for it.
Kenny Florian's Elbows from His Back
4 of 11Kenny Florian is one of the few fighters in MMA that is able to have success striking off of his back.
While he’s shown his wrestling leaves something to be desired, Kenny is a threat as soon as he pulls you into his guard, but unlike most BJJ blackbelts, it isn’t because he is looking to submit you.
Florian throws some vicious elbows from his back, and he has had success with them throughout his career, cutting open Joe Lauzon and Sean Sherk, among others.
Paul Sass' Triangle Choke
5 of 11Winning two or three fights in a row by submission is an accomplishment by itself, but winning your first eight fights by triangle choke is ridiculous.
Paul Sass has only competed inside the Octagon twice in his career, but he has won both fights by submission and of his 12 wins, he has finished all but one of those fights.
And not to scare any lightweight fighters, but Sass has recently added a deadly heel hook to his game, winning three of his last five by the leg lock.
Anthony Pettis' Showtime Kick
6 of 11To be fair, he’s only done this kick once in his career.
But are you ever going to remember Anthony Pettis for anything else?
Pettis went off the cage like he was Neo in the Matrix back at WEC 53, kicking Ben Henderson in the face and giving MMA fans an instant video to show their friends when you’re trying to convince them how awesome this sport is.
Cody McKenzie's Guillotine
7 of 11Remember Paul Sass and his crazy streak of triangle chokes?
Cody McKenzie laughs at Paul Sass and does him even better, as from April 2008 to December 2010, McKenzie won 10 straight fights, all by guillotine choke.
To say McKenzie has perfected the move is an understatement, and he has found a way to modify it to make it even more effective.
Georges St-Pierre's Superman Punch
8 of 11One of the top fighters in the sport, Georges St-Pierre has a plethora of moves in his arsenal that are extremely effective, but he uses his superman punch more often than anything else.
While he has perfected the strike as seen by his bouts against BJ Penn and Matt Hughes, St-Pierre has recently added a Superman jab to his attack and has used it in his last few fights and gotten decent results.
Jon Jones' Spinning Back Elbow
9 of 11One of the most brutal strikes on this list, Jon Jones and his unorthodox spinning back elbow have made MMA fans gasp with delight whenever he throws it.
Jones first threw the strike against Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94, smashing an unsuspecting Bonnar with it and knocking down the notoriously tough fighter.
Though Jones was unable to finish the fight with it, he showed how brutal the strike can be.
Junior Dos Santos' Uppercut
10 of 11Heading into his UFC debut, Junior dos Santos was a huge underdog against heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum.
One uppercut later and Dos Santos had established himself as a top up-and-coming fighter in the UFC.
Dos Santos wrecked Werdum with his uppercut and has since used it to beat up many opponents, including Roy Nelson at UFC 117.
Rampage Jackson's Slam
11 of 11One of the best highlights in MMA history features Rampage Jackson picking up Ricardo Arona and slamming him to the mat with a WWE-style powerbomb back at Pride Critical Countdown in 2004.
While Rampage has yet to successfully use his ability to slam an opponent in the UFC, his near slams of Forrest Griffin and Lyoto Machida have shown that he still possesses the power to take out any opponent in the world if he picks them up over his head.
