Penn State Scandal: Watch Penn State Alum John Amaechi Discuss Sandusky Scandal

Tom KinslowNov 16, 2011

In the fallout from the Jerry Sandusky scandal, plenty of Penn State alums have spoken out against the horrible allegations against the school and its iconic Joe Paterno, with John Amaechi the latest to join the team.

Amaechi made the news years ago after coming out of the closet as an openly gay man who had an NBA career, and now, as a Penn State alum and former volunteer for the Second Mile foundation, he is speaking out.

In an interview with ESPN's Dan LeBetard, Amaechi echoed the sentiment of so many Penn State students and alumni who have been shaken to their core by the events of the past week or so.

Penn Staters have pained for the victims, and have felt betryaed by these men who preached "Success With Honor," only to have those same figures fail to live up to those lofty ideals.

As a former Penn State basketball player, Amaechi is disgusted as someone who spent every day trying to do his best in representing the university, only to have this happen from the men who held student athletes to such a high standard.

Nothing will ever match the horror of what allegedly happened to those young boys, and you'd like to think that adults would do what it takes to stop these acts, regardless of what it would mean to the university; that is what has made it so much worse for Penn Staters.

You can see this emotion and conflict within Amaechi as he speaks.

He loves his school but is saddened and disgusted by the veil of secrecy that enveloped a university and created a horrendous situation for all of the victims in this case.

This is the type of message that has to be conveyed, and it shows the depth of Ameachi's knowledge and ability to separate school pride from the reality of the situation.

You can be upset and disappointed/outraged with the university and grieve for the victims at the same time, it just took Amaechi's eloquent words to put it all into context.

We could use more people like Ameachi, and we should all be glad he spoke.
