Presidents Cup 2011: Tiger Woods-Steve Williams Grouping Won't Produce Drama
Tiger Woods and Steve Williams will be a part of the same grouping during opening round play of the Presidents Cup. In case you aren't aware, these two have a history.
Williams was Woods' caddie for 13 of his 14 professional majors, and the overwhelming majority of his career wins. Recent months have not been as good.
First, we had Williams' comments which came immediately after Adam Scott, who Williams currently caddies for, won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
"I've been caddying for 33 years and I've never had a bigger win...It's the greatest week of my life caddying and I sincerely mean that.
"
That incident was detailed by ESPN's Bob Harig.
Things took an uglier turn recently when Williams uttered a racial comment in Woods' direction, saying, "It was my aim to shove it up that black a*******."
That incident was also detailed by Harig.
So, now Woods and Scott (and Williams) will be paired together for the first time since all of this happened.
As entertaining as it would be if these two decided to throw down in the middle of the first fairway, nothing even close to that will happen.
For one, players rarely interact with their actual opponent, they certainly won't interact with the caddie of their opponent. In a team format, they interact with their own caddie, their partner, and that's about it.
These two will stick to protocol. They have both been around for far too long to do anything other than sticking to protocol.
The cameras will be on them, the focus will be on them, and any slight deviation from protocol will be magnified.
As fun as that would be to watch and write on, that's not something that either Woods or Williams would want. More importantly, in this situation, it's not something that the teams would want. It's just such an unwelcome distraction.
No, if these two are ever going to have a moment like that, it would be completely off camera. Look for these two to be on their best behavior all week.
Not that I would mind being wrong.
