BCS Rankings: Will Oklahoma or Oregon Leapfrog Alabama If They All Win Out?

Danny FlynnNov 16, 2011

Everything’s set up perfectly right now for No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Oklahoma State to meet in the BCS National Championship Game.

Both teams are 10-0, both have distinguished themselves as obvious championship-caliber contenders and what’s really helped is that every other team in the Top 10 of the BCS standings has slipped up at least once this season, which takes away the need for a potential debate about which undefeated teams really belong in the championship game.

If the Tigers and the Cowboys win out, you probably won’t hear much grumbling about that title game matchup.

The only potential problem could be if Oklahoma State can’t get the job done against No. 5 Oklahoma in the Bedlam game on the final weekend of the season. Remember, the Cowboys haven’t beaten their in-state rival since 2002, so a win is far from guaranteed.

What would happen if we see one of the supposed “BCS Doomsday Scenarios” that leaves us with a one-loss Alabama team, a one-loss Oregon team and a one-loss Oklahoma team to choose from to put in the title game against LSU?

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, then the Sooners would have a great-looking win over a No. 2 ranked team on their resume, however, they would also have that terrible-looking loss to Texas Tech as well.

Alabama and Oregon have both lost to the top team in America, LSU, which looks much better than losing to a team like Texas Tech on your home field.

Still, the Tide and the Ducks wouldn’t have a win that can compare to beating Oklahoma State on the road, and the Sooners also have the benefit of playing in the Big 12, the conference that is receiving the most love from the BCS computers this year.

You also have to take into account if voters would actually want to see a rematch in the national title game, whether it be LSU-Alabama or LSU-Oregon.

We’ve already seen LSU take care of business against those two teams, but we haven’t seen what the Tigers could do against a team like Oklahoma.

Still, you have to wonder if voters really want to see an Oklahoma team that’s without its top running back, Dominique Whaley, and its best overall player, WR Ryan Broyles, in the championship game.

Right now, we’re forced to play the “what if” game, because there are still three weeks left in the season and a lot of scenarios can still play out. But if we do end up seeing Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma all duking it out for the No. 2 ranking in the final polls, it will make for a very interesting final Sunday of speculation on Dec. 4.
