Penn State Scandal: LaVar Arrington Rightfully Lashes Out at Jerry Sandusky

Tim DanielsNov 16, 2011

LaVar Arrington has been one of the most outspoken members of Penn State's alumni since the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal erupted last weekend. The former Nittany Lions linebacker played for Sandusky and hasn't minced words about his current feelings toward the coach (via CBS Washington).

"

“You’re pissed off because he has something to say, you’re pissed off because he sounds like he’s on something. You know what I’m pissed off about? He didn’t say he was sorry to those kids. He didn’t say he was sorry to the kids at Penn State. He didn’t say he was sorry to the players, he didn’t say was sorry to me, [to] us.”

Arrington went on to say he doesn't care if Sandusky is trying to maintain his innocence. Even the amount of contact he admitted during the interview was wrong and should have been apologized for during Sandusky's phone conversation with Bob Costas.

And he couldn't be more right.

The 67-year-old former defensive coordinator has already been convicted in the court of public opinion and didn't do himself any favors on Rock Center with Brian Williams. The least he could have done is issued an apology instead of stammering his way through Costas' tough questions.

Nobody can deny Sandusky his day in front of jury, but people are expecting to see a lit more remorse from him than simply saying he shouldn't have showered with young boys. That's pretty obvious at this point, Jerry.

For every Arrington, who is willing to use his public figure status to lambaste Sandusky, there are a handful of donors who are probably reconsidering their alliance with Penn State.

Even though the university has attempted to distance itself from the alleged sexual abuser, it has a lot of work to do before its image starts to recover. Arrington is the perfect example of somebody who isn't shying away from his Penn State roots, but isn't exactly thrilled about the ongoing situation, either.

Allowing Sandusky to conduct an interview was a questionable decision by his lawyer Joe Amendola. But he should have at least made sure his client came off as an apologetic, sympathetic individual. That certainly didn't happen.

Which gives Arrington, and every other Penn State alum, a reason to be mad.
