WWE: Vince's Obsession with Twitter Is Annoying but Harmless

T. SchaeferNov 16, 2011

I remember recently I was hanging out with my wife, mother and step-father while watching the NFL. We had imbibed a few beers and the game was an inconsequential last-season affair that wasn't really worth remembering.

I received a text on my BlackBerry Storm. As with all things from this friend, it was a chain text message that read something like:

"

"if you forward this message to ten of your friends in the next five minutes, some starving nun in Monrovia would get a penny from Bill Gates. Failure to do so will result in you DEATH!"

While responding back with some rather colorful words for receiving a chain text message, my mom asked what I was doing. I explained I was texting a friend back (IN ALL CAPS RAGE!) and her eyes sparkled.

Like most mothers, mine knows how to work a computer and various electronics, but just enough to be dangerous. She just never got around to playing with text messages on her phone. She would receive them, but never replied.

After forewarning her of possible charges without a text plan, I showed her how to use her phone for sending random messages to people. This was like giving a five-year-old child a puppy and a cup of a coffee. She became a machine.

Upon receiving her first bill and remembering my warning, she switched to an unlimited text plan. To this day, she is still texting her heart out with videos and music and anything thing else that tickles her. I get the occasional chain message from her, but I can deal with it.

As of late, there is a lot of rumbling about the WWE's fascination with twitter. WrestleNewz explains it this way:

"

"A lot of people backstage at Monday’s RAW were rolling their eyes at the constant Twitter references. As noted before, Vince McMahon is a huge fan of Twitter these days and is fascinated with being able to get terms to trend worldwide."

"

Much to the consternation of fans apparently.  Doing a search on Google for "wwe twitter obsession" will result in page upon page of fans that are annoyed to no end with it. Kind of like a friend sending you a chain text on your phone.

At the end of the day, you can learn to tune out certain things and deal with what's important.  At work, it's occasionally getting something done that's related to the job. When dealing with a TV program that you enjoy, it's learning to deal with commercials.

Wrestling fans will deal with a lot to follow their passion. Switching from the "Attitude Era" to the "PG Era." Going from a surly redneck to a comedic jock as the face of the company. Transitioning from cartoon-like gimmicks to characters with more grey-area then an elephant. At the end of the day, fans deal with a lot. So this latest craze is just like anything else.

Whether the WWE has a deal with Twitter or it's Vince McMahon's latest obsession with the world of Social Media is simply irrelevant. As annoying as it might be, it just boils down to harmless fascination.

Excuse me, I need to get this text.
