Premier League: Power Ranking the Top Midfield Providers from Each Club

Joe TanseyNov 16, 2011

Every team in a top league like the Premier League needs someone in the midfield that can provide not only with great passes and assists but with some goals as well.

There are several talented midfielders in the English game, which made it hard to choose just 20 (one per team) for this list.

This list is full of veterans who have been practicing their trade in England's top flight for a while, as well as some newcomers to the game and a young player or two that have a very bright future.

20. Joe Allen (Swansea)

1 of 20

Joe Allen has been an integral part of the Swans' early-season success in their first Premier League season.

The Welsh international has played in all of the club's games this season and has also been able to net two goals.

19. Ben Watson (Wigan)

2 of 20

It was tough to find an actual provider for the Latics, as they have struggled mightily this season and their best provider, Hugo Rodallega, is a striker.

Ben Watson has been able to make a small impact for Roberto Martinez so far this season, as he has scored twice, including a goal in the club's last game against Wolves.

18. Chris Brunt (West Brom)

3 of 20

The captain of West Brom, Chris Brunt, has been a rock in midfield since his transfer from Sheffield Wednesday in 2007.

This season, the 26-year-old has already provided the Baggies with four assists in his eleven games out of the midfield.

17. Matthew Etherington (Stoke)

4 of 20

When Stoke were first promoted to the Premier League in 2008, the easy answer for top provider would be Rory Delap, but now that the Potters are an established middle-of-the-table club, they have better quality in midfield.

The best quality in midfield the Potters have is the former West Ham man, Matthew Etherington, who has been a force on the wing ever since he joined the club in 2009.

16. David Hoilett (Blackburn)

5 of 20

David Hoilett has been a bright spot in a dark time for Blackburn, as the 21-year-old Canadian continues to impress fans on a regular basis.

The Canadian is in his third year with the club and is now beginning to make an impact game after game, as he already has two goals and three assists in league play this season.

15. Stiliyan Petrov (Aston Villa)

6 of 20

The Villains have seen their fare share of good young midfielders come through the ranks at Villa Park over the past few seasons in Ashley Young and James Milner, but one constant force has been roaming the midfield since 2006.

That force is the club's captain Stiliyan Petrov, who has played at least 28 games in each of his five seasons at Villa Park.

14. Anthony Pilkington (Norwich City)

7 of 20

Anthony Pilkington has been one of the top signings from the summer transfer window, as he has made a huge impact on the Canaries' early-season run to mid-table.

The 23-year-old arrived in East Anglia from Huddersfield Town in the summer and has been in form ever since with four goals in his first 10 games for Norwich.

13. Matthew Jarvis (Wolves)

8 of 20

At this time last season, Matthew Jarvis was well on his way to earning his first England call-up, but now he has faded away from the spotlight just a bit with a struggling Wolves club.

The 25-year-old is already in his fifth season with Wolves, and he could see a move away from the Molineux Stadium in the near future if he gets back into the form he was in last season.

12. Chris Eagles (Bolton)

9 of 20

Chris Eagles has been a burst of energy to a Bolton squad that have struggled this season.

After coming over from Burnley in the summer, Eagles has scored three times and has two assists as well.

The in-form Englishman is just what the doctor ordered for Bolton's midfield, with Stuart Holden being out for a long time.

11. Joey Barton (QPR)

10 of 20

The ever controversial Joey Barton is a quality footballer as well.

After practicing his trade at Newcastle for five years, Barton moved on to QPR and has been a force in the midfield at Loftus Road in the eight games he has played for the London club.

10. Sebastian Larsson (Sunderland)

11 of 20

Sebastian Larsson has also made an impact on his current club after a summer transfer.

The Swede left Birmingham for Sunderland to stay in the Premier League, and he has not disappointed manager Steve Bruce.

With his strong performances for club and country, Larsson is in form and is a player to watch for in Poland and Ukraine next summer.

9. Tim Cahill (Everton)

12 of 20

If there is one player to associate with Everton over the past eight seasons, it has to be Tim Cahill.

The heart and soul of the Toffees has been an impact player and a huge provider of goals when he has been healthy.

Most of Cahill's 54 league goals in those eight seasons have been when his club was in need of a goal to either complete a comeback or solidify a victory.

8. Clint Dempsey (Fulham)

13 of 20

Clint Dempsey has been a provider in midfield for Fulham since his move from MLS in 2006.

The American has been a strong force on the wing for the Cottagers, and he scored his career high in goals with 12 in the Premier League last season.

This season, the Texas native already has three goals in a somewhat lackluster season for Fulham.

7. Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle)

14 of 20

Jonas Gutierrez has to be one of the most underrated players in the Premier League.

The Argentine may not score many goals, but he is a solid rock in the middle of the Magpies midfield.

Jonas also stayed with the club when they dropped down to the Championship for the 2009-10 season and was one of the best players that season.

The 28-year-old has also been one of the keys to Newcastle's stunning success to start this season as the club remains undefeated.

6. Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

15 of 20

Although Jack Wilshere is out injured right now, he is still the top midfielder on the Gunners roster—even with the summer transfer of Mikel Arteta from Everton.

Wilshere had a breakout season last year, and when he returns from injury in the next month or two, you will see why Arsenal is a better club when the 19-year-old English international takes the pitch.

5. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

16 of 20

Steven Gerrard has been a constant in Liverpool's midfield since his first team debut in 1998.

The Englishman is getting close to his 400th Premier League game, which he should play in this season.

In his time at Liverpool, the midfield maestro has won two FA Cups, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League and a UEFA Cup, but he is still after his first Premier League title.

4. Nani (Manchester United)

17 of 20

Nani has been the perfect replacement on the wing for his fellow Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last season was Nani's breakout year, and he has continued his success this season.

With Ashley Young on the other wing, United's attacking midfielders could be a deadly force to be reckoned with.

3. Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

18 of 20

No one has made more of an impact on the pitch at Stamford Bridge in the past decade than Frank Lampard.

Lampard has made over 500 appearance in the Premier League and is close to 150 goals in the league.

With the revolving door of players and managers at Chelsea under owner Roman Abromavich, Lampard has been the one man there for all of it and has been the true definition of a midfield provider for the Blues.

2. Rafael Van Der Vaart (Tottenham)

19 of 20

Rafael Van der Vaart is the true top midfield provider on Tottenham.

Yes, Gareth Bale is a top talent, but the veteran van der Vaart has meant so much more to Spurs since his move from Real Madrid in 2010.

The Dutchman escaped the bench at Real Madrid and catapulted himself right into the Spurs starting lineup, making a sudden impact at White Hart Lane.

1. David Silva (Manchester City)

20 of 20

You can make an argument that Silva is the best player in the Premier League right now.

Since joining Manchester City from Valencia last summer, the Spaniard has 25 total assists in all competitions, with seven coming already this season in 11 games.

In an ever-changing City lineup, Silva is a main fixture for the club, and he will no doubt be a main fixture for Spain at Euro 2012 if he continues his current form.
