7 MMA Fighters Whose Bark Is Bigger Than Their Bite
An inevitability of MMA is fighters who talk trash.
Some fighters have made an art of it, and some fighters get fights based on angering their potential opponents with it—ahem, Nick Diaz.
However, for every fighter who talks trash and backs it up, there have to be some who simply can't back up the talk.
Lets take a look at seven fighters whose bark is bigger than their bite.
James Toney
1 of 7James Toney chased Dana White all over the country asking for a fight.
He called White names, and mocked him.
Well, Toney got his fight, and talked trash all the way up to it, insulting the UFC, fighters and anyone else he could think of.
At UFC 118, he got his mouth, and carotid artery, shut.
Randy Couture submitted him with an arm triangle choke, and Toney's lights went out.
Matt Wiman
2 of 7Anybody remember this fight?
At UFC 60, Spencer Fisher faced off against Matt Wiman.
In the second round, Fisher landed a solid right hook, which Wiman was able to walk through; however, that wasn't enough for him.
He looked at Fisher and shook his head, saying "nah uh."
Fisher responded with a flying knee that knocked him out.
In the words of Mike Goldberg, "yes, my son."
Michael Bisping
3 of 7All the way through coaching on The Ultimate Fighter, Michael Bisping talked smack to Dan Henderson.
Then in a pre-fight interview, he said that he sees no threat from Hendo, that nobody has landed that big shot on him, and he's never been put on his ass.
That would all change at UFC 100, as Dan Henderson landed one of the most memorable knockouts in MMA history.
It's all over YouTube. You can find it with a quick search.
Rampage Jackson
4 of 7In the buildup to UFC 135, we all saw a new side of Jon Jones.
Jones and Rampage Jackson talked smack back and forth, and made no secret that they were not fond of each other.
The day before the fight, in an interview, Rampage had to be in a different location, because he simply refused to be in the same room as Jones.
After all this smack talking back and forth, they finally met in the cage, where Rampage was effectively handled and eventually submitted in the fourth round.
After the fight, Rampage was very gracious towards Jones, and they appeared to bury the hatchet.
Josh Koscheck
5 of 7On season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter, Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck were the coaches.
This is another case of a fighter talking smack all the way through the season, and not being able to back it up at the end.
Koscheck said everything he could think of to GSP, and GSP's coaches, but could not get a rise out of Georges.
GSP did his talking at UFC 124, where he broke Koscheck's orbital bone, and laid a beatdown on him for 25 minutes.
Jorge Rivera
6 of 7For Jorge Rivera's fight against Michael Bisping at UFC 127, it was likely his first- and last-ever trash talking battle.
Prior to the fight, Rivera made a series of videos—which can be seen on YouTube—which were extremely insulting towards Bisping.
Then, when they finally fought, Rivera lost the fight via second-round TKO. Not to mention eating an illegal knee in the process.
That's probably the last time Rivera will ever talk smack.
Chael Sonnen
7 of 7Okay, so maybe his bark is slightly bigger than his bite—by about two minutes.
At UFC 117, Chael Sonnen came within 1:50 of winning the UFC middleweight title, but then he was forced to submit to a triangle choke from Anderson Silva.
Prior to the fight, Sonnen talked a massive amount of smack, which truly angered Silva.
Sonnen then backed up his talk for 23 minutes and 10 seconds.
However, since that loss, Sonnen has not stopped talking about Silva.
Check out his Twitter. It's totally worth it.
Hopefully, he'll get a chance to redeem himself against Silva in 2012.
