UFC 139: Dan Henderson and the 5 Best Chins on the Card

First LastNov 15, 2011

With heavy-hitters like Dan Henderson, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Wanderlei Silva lined up for this weekend's UFC event in San Jose, Calif., MMA fans will be anticipating a lot of action and a lot of knockouts.

It's a good thing the majority of fighters on the card have granite chins, because they will have to go through their opponents' knockout blows to establish their own attack.

Outside of the main event between Henderson and Rua, other fights include Martin Kampmann vs. Rick Story, Wanderlei Silva vs. Cung Le, Stephan Bonnar vs. Kyle Kingsbury and Brian Bowles vs. Urijah Faber.

These are the five best chins on the card.

Notable Mention: Urijah Faber

1 of 6

For reasons outside of being able to take a punch, former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber deserves a spot on this list just for having one of the more unique-looking chins in the sport.

It will have to hold up pretty well when he takes on another former WEC champion in Brian Bowles at UFC 139.

No. 5: Rick Story

2 of 6

Rick Story is among the best of the up-and-coming welterweights, but his recent defeat to Charlie Brenneman has set him back in his pursuit for a chance at the title.

A six-fight win streak preceded that loss, which included wins over heavy-hitters like Thiago Alves, Johny Hendricks and Brian Foster.

Those three alone have a combined 25 knockout victories, and although Story pulled through in each, he didn't leave unmarked. He had to go through some heavy firepower from each to get the victory.

No. 4: Martin Kampmann

3 of 6

Welterweight fighter Martin Kampmann made a name for himself fighting much larger opponents during his middleweight run a couple years ago, and it was there that the Danish fighter established a reputation as one of the toughest men to finish.

Kampmann has fallen to fighters like Nate Marquardt and Paul Daley, but he showed his ability to take a punch before being stopped due to an accumulation of strikes in both bouts.

If you want to see how tough he really is, just watch his fights with Carlos Condit and Drew McFederies.

No. 3: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

4 of 6

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had a tough outing against Jon Jones earlier this year when he lost his title, but the Brazilian Muay-Thai expert recently rebounded to defeat Forrest Griffin in a rematch at UFC 134.

Rua's upcoming bout with Dan Henderson will show just how well he can take a punch, and if anyone is going to test it, it's Henderson.

It will be impressive if Rua can take one of Hendo's right hands that has knocked out the former Olympian's last three opponents, including Fedor Emelianenko, Rafael Cavalcante and Renato "Babalu" Sobral.

No. 2: Stephan Bonnar

5 of 6

Ultimate Fighter 1 finalist "The American Pyscho" Stephan Bonnar has become accustomed to tasting his own blood in every one of his bouts, and his tremendous ability to take punishment has led him to never being stopped by anything other than cuts.

With a 13-7 record, Bonnar has fought with the best of the best and taken most of them the distance. He is also one of two men who have taken current UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones to the final bell.

Bonnar will be facing Kyle Kingsbury this weekend and may just need to rely on his toughness once again to pull out the victory.

No. 1: Dan Henderson

6 of 6

Dan Henderson might not only have the best chin on the card, but he may also have the best chin in MMA.

With successful Pride and Strikeforce title reigns behind him, the 40-year-old can make the claim he has never really been close to being knocked out in any of his high-profile bouts. That is impressive considering the type of fighters he has faced over the years.

In a career of 36 bouts against fighters like Wanderlei Silva, Quinton Jackson and Vitor Belfort, Henderson has never been knocked out, and he has only been knocked down a handful of times throughout his career—only to get up and win most of them after.
