Floyd Mayweather: Money's Camp Needs To Play Nice to Secure Fight with Pac-Man
The fight I want is the fight you want is the fight that everyone wants.
Shoot, there are no other fights. This is it. The Big One. The Fight to End All Fights.
It's also The Fight That Doesn't Actually Exist.
Whether or not this fight has ever existed is debatable. It sounds like it certainly doesn't exist now. Pac-Man said (see ESPN.com) after defeating Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday night that he's ready for it, but his camp is apparently singing a different tune.
Specifically, members of Mayweather's camp told ESPN.com that Bob Arum, Pac-Man's promoter, has told them he is not interested.
"We have been informed that Bob Arum is not interested in pursuing a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at this time," said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.
According to Schaefer, Arum and Top Rank Promotions are busy pursuing a fourth fight with Marquez as Pac-Man's next bout, and that they simply cannot be troubled with the idea of reopening negotiations with Mayweather.
Leonard Ellerbe, one of Money's advisors, accused Pac-Man's camp of blatant cowardice.
"In my opinion, you have three cowards—Bob Arum, Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao. Now we all know the truth once and for all why this fight hasn't been made. It should be clear to everyone that they don't care what the fans want, especially when Floyd is ready, willing and able to fight Manny Pacquiao now. Floyd said if this isn't clear, he doesn't know what is.
"
The short version is this: Pac-Man's people are doing other things, and Mayweather's people are pissed.
Is there a way Money's people can get them to reconsider?
Probably not, but they could try to do one thing they haven't done yet, and that's play nice.
I know, I know. It's a weird thing to say in a boxing discussion, and "nice" is not a word that we throw around all that much when we're talking about Floyd Mayweather. He's not a nice man, and neither are his people. He's a menace, and they are businessmen.
But if they want to make this fight happen, it can't hurt to fake like they are nice as nice can be. What they need to do is swallow their pride and basically approach Arum and Pac-Man with their tails between their legs. Arum clearly wants Pac-Man to be treated as the superior fighter and the bigger draw, so Money's people and Money himself would do well to bow to the desire to see them bow.
Once they adopt this stance, they might want to back off their drug testing demands, which stretch the limits of absurdity. Money may have to accept the fact that he won't know for sure just how clean Pac-Man is if and when he steps into the ring with him, but Money shouldn't be overly worried about that after watching Pac-Man's most recent bout with Marquez.
If you missed it, Pac-Man barely won. Many argue that he shouldn't have won. In turn, many have proclaimed Money could beat him rather easily.
The only way we'll find out for sure is if we get these two in the ring together. Since they've exhausted seemingly all their options, Money's people may have to stoop to get that done.
This may seem like a stretch. But honestly, do you have any better ideas?
